In my case, I first used the "hide" function, but then I discovered that the KB created a /GWX folder in /SYSTEM32, and that in turn was linked to Registry items, and that in turn caused some of my best customizations to stop working. Uninstalling the KB removed the /GWX folder and things could then get back to "normal."

BTW, the same fix worked perfectly in my 8.1 machines.

This goddamned Win10 notification just keeps coming back. I'm uninstalling KB3035583 now and hoping that it works.

It's very rude of MS to make the damned notification keep coming back when the user REPEATEDLY tells it to hide itself. I wouldn't care if it would just stay hidden like I told it!

I don't think I've updated Windows since December, due to having it disabled when surfing on my phone's data plan.

I would be curious about "why" also.

I have W7 on my HTPC... where I use Windows Media Center exclusively. WMC pretty much disappeared with W8 forward.

I have W7 on my business desktop... where I finally have it setup the way I want it. I really don't like the look of W8.1... I have it on my gaming computer upstairs and have found the GUI cluttered and if not necessarily difficult to work with, at least not as fast and intuitive as W7.

I will update my W8.1 game PC to W9... errr, I mean W10... and see what MS has done with it. If I can configure it to look and act like W7... well, then, I'll update; otherwise I'll just run W7 to EOL and upgrade to W20 (or whatever) then. As far as the HTPC, about the time W7/WMC EOLs, there will be something newer/better than what is available now... very likely open-source.

"Why not" is far more valid in this case. If you a) have no intention to install Windows 10, and b) would be doing a clean install even if you did, then there is ZERO justification for having it install multiple upgrade related updates, including an additional service and always running process.

While your additional points are valid, I still don't see the point of going crazy and taking ownership of winSXS and various other things. So it is still "why" to me.

What version is everyone using these days, just installed WIN10 10130 a bit ago.

It seems very nice for the video actually, I do notice a pretty nice jup there myself, bit still fighting with a few audio problems.

I was never a WMC user myself, still have a few things I've changed and might again.

I'm actually pretty impressed with the video jump myself.

Maybe it's just my old system, but things video do look a bit cleaner.

This junk... and who knows what else...

If only I had known this sooner, I might have saved three, maybe four whole megabytes of disk space.

Even multiplying that figure by ten hardly makes any relative difference, it's not as if we only have half a gig of space for all our data anymore, is it?

---

The technique I used was to disable the scheduled tasks with relation to GWX.

So much hackery and foolery for something that is as simple as right click the tray, Windows 10 icon -> Hide. or

Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Gwx]
"DisableGwx"=dword:00000001

Good to know, thanks for the tip.

Only if you have that little tick box in your Windows updates checked that says "give me recommended updates the same way as important."

Don't tick that box, you won't get them. It even asks you when you first install Windows whether to do all updates, or just the important ones.

MS is not playing games, you're just not paying attention :p

Of course they are playing games.

Too lazy to read whole thread fully I had a Windows 10 notification that I was able to hide the GWX from the notification area customize and its working so for me so far.

Mikey, you know it's not about the HD space... it's about the nose of the camel in the tent.

Mikey, you know it's not about the HD space... it's about the nose of the camel in the tent.

I assume in this analogy MS is the camel and the tent is your PC? If so, I can see two valid positions:

1) Full paranoia - don't trust any updates that come from MS on the basis that you can't inspect the source code (assuming you knew how to read it) and a question mark over whether it would be possible for a knowledgeable user to compile the update's source code through a self-compiled Windows Update set of binaries. Assuming that one cannot self-compile both of those components, refusing all updates results in lower OS security which is a bad idea.

2) Refuse particular updates with good reason. The last potential good reason I remember was when MS threw in a Windows Update that also installed a Firefox plug-in. This was several years ago IIRC.

"Good reason" IMHO falls into three categories: Performance, security or reliability. Since I very much doubt that GWX is going to have an impact on any of those three, IMO it serves no useful purpose to refuse to install them.

Don't get me wrong... I'm not a tinfoil hat wearer. I like and use MS software, my concern is how they are going about introducing W10. Much like my last installation trial with Outlook'03, where they wouldn't even let me validate it because it's EOL... which meant I had to go fetch O'13 to get my email back... they are really hammering this W10 install deal... and I'm not sure why (I can only guess.)

Here's the deal... I don't want W10 on my 2 W7 machines, and I don't want any sort of notification or program update running otherwise... is that too much to ask? I regularly uninstall programs or portions of programs I don't need or use... less bloat in an already bloated OS install, not just this W10 update.

Right.... Just about any app on your pc has this issue, maybe you should delete them all.

An app that I install and wish to use is one thing, something I don't want or need is quite another...

I deleted the GWX folder some time back. Now I see it has returned, as of 7/3. Also config.cab under the Download folder was updated on 7/19. Maybe I'm not allowed to delete it.

Now I cannot delete it [again]. Window pop-up tells me that ...

[Window Title] Folder Access Denied

You need permission to perform this
action

You require permission from TrustedInstaller to make changes to this folder

GWX

Nice. Now I must be on the Microsoft Naughty List.
