Supreme Commander demo runs like poo! Game recommendations.

On my Amd 4000+, 1.5 Gb DDR400, 7800GTX rig, the Supreme Commander demo runs like poop at 1920*1200, the native res of my monitor.Even at medium overall settings, the game is very uncomfortable to play. At low, the games looks like something from 10 years ago and still doesn't run at the fps it should. I'm not buying a dual core, I'll wait for quad core to come into the norm.

So I'd like to ask for suggestions for games that are great like Supreme Commander but easier on my computer. RTS games to be specific. Large unit counts. Air, Land, and Sea? Red Alert 2 rocked my world.

Thanks.

turn of the shadows

runs fine for me (slows alot down when I push the unit limit to the max though, but thats expected)

Medium Settings
- Shadows off
1280x768 or something (have a 24" dell so I'm not running native since that would be crazy talk with my specs)

Athlon 3500+
Radeon 9700pro
1gb ram

I think this is an issue of Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair. Check to
see what kinds of crap you have running in the background and get Driver Cleaner and then install some quality 3rd party drivers for your GeForce.

I have an X800 Pro in my office machine and its hooked up to a 23" widescreen. At low quality and the native resolution (1920x1200) it is very playable and looks good, MUCH BETTER than anything 10 years ago. I suspect the OP didnt have a computer in 1997 or wasnt playing games back then.

On my game rig I have a GeForce 7900GTX and the game looks great at 1920x1440 with max details and still gets playable framerates.
I also have less RAM but its faster and I have an Athlon 4800+ (dual Toledo core).
I suspose I could block the processes access to one of the cores and see if that makes a real difference.

If you're looking for another RTS check out Company of Heroes. It's the best 😛

But it is the exact opposite of what you wanted, instead of lots of units that don't matter you use only a small amount and play on very small maps. Quite different than SupCom and most RTS in that you need to be very very aggressive and active, but quite fun. However if you've really got your heart set on a game like TA then really SupCom is the only thing like it on the market. Maybe get a 2nd video card and do SLI?

I'm gonna wait till quadcore comes into the scene. I JUST got done upgrading 1 years ago, so I refuse to upgrade for awhile. It's my CPU because Supreme Commander was made for dual cores.

Anyways. Yes, Company of Heroes, Command and Conquer Generals, and Warhammer all feel really small to me compared to Supreme Commander. Any games with large unit counts and big maps?

It seems that when an RTS is made 3d, that the massiveness of the scale goes down. Red Alert 2 has a nice scale. Any further recommendations.

I'm gonna try turn my shadows off, go to medium fidelity, and decrease my resolution. I was trying to play at 1920*1200, because its my native. That's not going to work. I'll try a smaller widescreen resolution and see how it works. I hate native resolution and interopulation just for this exact reason.

I turned all settings to low, it plays alot better with many units and its still awsome because most of my time I spend it watching the map with little icons so I can more easily identify the units.

The Total War series is 3D and has tons of units. It's a much different style than a regular RTS though.

Age of Empires 3 was pretty good... Just look at the RTS games released 2 years or more ago and you should be able to run them fine.
