I've been interviewing for a job and they've asked me for references.

How'd I do it? List out the names & positions of my previous bosses? Do I need to call up my ex-bosses / companies and ask them if it's ok with them?

Never been asked for references before, so I don't have a clue :(

HELP !

Yes, you need to generally ask if you can list them as a reference.

A sample reference might look like:

Joseph Smith, Supervisor
Anandtech Enterprise
(800) 555-1234
4201 5th Ave, Austin, TX 78703

Where Supervisor is replaced their relationship with you. If you need to list personal references as well, they come AFTER professional ones. Professional ones might be supervisor, manager, co-worker, etc.

Sometimes they will just want to make sure you worked the days you worked, so listing the general number for the business you used to work at is helpful so they can quickly get transferred to HR. Mine is a single page with 8 people listed, with the names bolded and everything centered, with an empty line between each entry. With my name & info, and the work "Reference" on the top, underlined.

Hope that helps, lots of variation in how its done, the idea is to get the info your new workplace wants.
