supply trouble

Hello, would a weak supply cause my comp to shut down once in a while ?
Then it would take forever get enough juice to power back up. It wouldn't have enough power to light the lights on the front of the case. My current supply is about 5 yrs old.

I don't know all the specs off the top but I do have
Abit IC7 Max3 mb
Intel CPU
GeForce Nvidea 6800gt agp
Its a Sparkle Power FSP 550 60 PLG 550w
what else would be helpfull for you ?

one other thing..I have noticed once in a while I would hear a loud beeping, maybe coming from my vid card. And there have been a couple times I would loose video signal and I would have to unhook the vid card and check the plugs , then things were fine.

The reason I think it's PS is now it won't even boot up. The case lights won't come on and it won't boot up.
 
The 6800s did beep when the connectors were not pluged in. From the specs (unless someone knows of bad history regarding this model) looks like it should not have any issues at all powering your comp with 36A on 12v rail.

Check all the connections, (cheap molexes tend to be either too tight or too loose). Check power switch etc

Otherwise I would think it kicked the bucket. Do you have any spair comp to check parts or take another psu out to check in you machine?
 
I have check all I know how......plugs and switch, its not doing anything. I have taken the ps out ..is there a way to have it checked ?
If it has failed what do I replace it with ?

If you replace it, which it sounds like it does need replacing, I would consider the $60 - $20 MIR = $40 Corsair 400cx PSU. It has plenty of power for your system and comes with a 5 yr warranty too!!

That Corsair looks like a good one, also looks like it only has a 3 yr warranty
If no others to consider I will pull the triger and buy form newegg 😎
