Supertuner IIID really better than anything else?

No different than using a EQ. It's a fancy way to say they have automatic EQ presets, which have been available for years.

LOL..no. You are thinking EEQ or whatver...

Supertuner IIID is a simply the FM reciever...

I've got one on my Pioneer head unit, and it gets stations better than the Kenwoods or Alpine's I've used in the past...

I think they have the lowest sensitivity rating...
 
Ive looked at the sony and pioneer head units in the past, and the sony had the lower fm sensitivity ratings at the time. My current sony headunit is going out and I like the radio but didnt know if this supertuner really was something great or not..
thing is the sonys look a little better cosmetically and the pioneers appear to have this advantage.
 
The two models in question are the sony cdx-gt500 and pioneer deh-p5800mp.. both appear to be nice cd players, but the pioneer has the OEL display and the sony has some sort of dot matrix fl display. The pioneer also has this supertuner, so I'm thinking its probably the better buy..

Thats as good as an endorsement as anything, stock radios are actually pretty good at picking up AM/FM in my experience.

When I replaced the factory Delphi radio in my Pontiac with a Sony cd player the radio reception got drastically worse.

SSIR (Sony's AM/FM tech) I can vouch that it doenst match factory GM radio reception.
My current Sony headunit has been kind of a piece of crap, to be quite honest. My older, non-Xplod model was great though (8 years ago).

Looks like I'll be buying the Pioneer with that nice OEL display. It shouldnt wash out in the sun like the Sonys do.
 
That's right BUT AM rules for the VOICE. FM just doesn't sound right.

For music FM is obviously better and it has stereo but it has its drawbacks big time. XM is better in that regard in a moving vessel but the compression takes its toll. Thank goodness hard drives are getting cheaper at the rate gas is getting more expensive.

I just bought a DEH-3700MP from pioneer from my work yesterday, to replace my stock Mazda headunit. All I can say is WOW. There is absolutely NO distortion at high volume now, and the bass just KICKS you in the butt! Even better, we were selling it for 160, and I got it for 80, installed.

 
Thats a nice one too. I am looking for the OEL display just because its not that much more $ (and my current sony cd player has nice graphics, so I dont want to take a downgrade).

But when I buy my 2009 Camaro Z28, I'll be using the factory stereo in that car. So this new headunit I'm putting in my current car will be taken out and moved into my 2nd car.. so I want this one to be the best quality thing I can get.

Anything can play a CD, but finding high quality AM/FM reception in the aftermarket headunits is a true challenge.

I can speak from having multiple Sony headunits they simply do not perform.
At least not as well as the GM Delphi factory units in regards to radio reception. I like talk radio (Rush/Sean Hannity) and not being able to pickup the FM station I want to get is pretty annoying to.
 
Update: Finished soldering and shrink tubing the wires to put in the Pioneer DEH-P5800MP.

Thoughts- I agree with Horus completely. This thing blows away my old Sony headunits, esp the Xplod era stuff.
The clarity of sound and bass is amazing in comparison. And the Supertuner is no gimmick.. this picks up both AM and FM stations far better than any aftermarket headunit I've ever seen.

The remote and MP3 playback work great as well. Having built-in XM circuitry is a huge bonus as I'm a fan of XM radio.

The screen is pretty impressive for the price (I paid $166). Easily worth the price for the GM Delphi AM/FM quality reception (and very possibly BETTER, which is saying alot).

I'd def recommend a Pioneer headunit first to anyone interested. I wont be buying anymore Sony Xplod.

I cant state enough the sound quality difference. I have aftermarket Sony Xplod 3ways in the front (2 spkrs) and Xplod 6x9s in the rear. It sounds like I upgraded my speakers, the bass and clarity is very noticably beyond what my Sony was capable of doing.
Dont know if its the whole MOSFET amp or what.. but the difference is there.
Though I'm sure an expensive headunit from any brand could destroy the lower end Xplod headunits like I had.

One thing is definite, anything can play a cd... but if you are a fan of AM/FM radio at all- A Pioneer is the brand to get at any price range.
