I'm curious if anyone has seen Superman Returns in 3D at the IMAX. It is supposed to have 20 minutes of footage in a new 3D technology that doesn't give a headache or nausea feeling and looks a lot better. The latest Popular Science (june 06) has a whole article on the advent of 3D movies, and how many high profile directors including Peter Jackson, George Lucas, James Cameron, and Steven Spielberg are not just sold on the new 3-D tech, but are planning to launch movies completely in 3-D. (and possibly only in 3-D from now on).
Heres a couple of excerpts:
"What you'll see is better than any previous 3-D. No Vibrations. No Color Loss. No Distortions that cause your brain and stomach to revolt."

"Now any film, from Gone with the Wind to Gone in 60 seconds, can be transformed into High-quality 3-D. Filming in 3-D is also simpler and more effective than ever, thanks to new high-end cameras and post production tricks"

Has anyone had a chance to catch Superman in 3D? Is it really all that? I plan to try to see a showing at our local IMAX but was just wondering what I should be expecting.

I saw it in IMAX 3D. The 3D was impressive. Plus, all the "coming attractions" were in 3D as well.

I wouldn't say it was breathtaking, but it was impressive for 3D movies. I don't know why there would be a big push to make only 3D movies, though - it really doesn't add anything except a neat 3D effect. A lousy movie would still be lousy.

I saw it yesterday!!! :) Great movie. Brian Singer did a great job. The editing was excellent in the movie, and people who said it was slow must have ADD or something.

I will definitely watch it at IMAX if I get a chance.

I saw it on IMAX over the weekend. The 3D is definitely vastly improved over previous attempts at 3D (Jaws 3-D!!!). But I found that in the fast action sequence (the shuttle rescue), it was really hard to focus on anything, so a lot of what was going on just became a blur. Still pretty neat though

Well, to repspond to my own thread:

I went and saw it in 3D last night. First of all it definetly wasn't IMAX, just normal movie size. Not sure if everywhere is like that or not. The 3D trailers were an added plus but all of them were CG films, no real life. The actual 3D implimentation was just OK. It was definetly better than red/blue 3D but it still had the same look. It almost felt like a beta for what 3D could be. Sometimes it'd look really good, but other times it just looked like a bunch of 2d images laid out in different spacing. Also I agree with Slick that it was hard to focus on shots with a lot of action. Every seen that had 3D took a split second for my eyes to adjust before getting the picture.

I did like how they told you to put the glasses on or off. Very informative but uninterrupting. I can't see this being anything super new or huge. It'd be cool every once in a while but this is not the same as what sound or color did for the movies.

The majority of new 3D product will be displayed digitally using the technology from a company called RealD. IMAX is incredibly expensive to do 3D films for, though the presentation is arguably superior at present.

They have some interesting suff and are working with other companies to get older films converted (they still have a ways to go on this) and broadcast live events (sporting events, concerts, etc) in 3D equipped theatres. The new Sony film Monster House will be released on July 21 in over 100 theatres equipped with this projection technology.

The 3d was not worth it and gave me a headache. Many scenes were done poorly to the point that the only thing that really "worked" in 3d was people. Objects in the foreground were often suffering from parallax problems. It was a stupid gimmick and I think that my enjoyment of the movie suffered as a result. The previews were good though.
