Which one do you prefer?

I've liked pretty much every Nolan movie ever made, with the caveat that I haven't seen Tenant.

McTiernan did Die Hard and Predator which are absolute classics. But there are some pretty crappy movies mixed in there, 13th Warrior has to be one of the worst movies I have ever seen. So he might have just struck gold twice.

So I'll go Nolan at this point with a close decision, as Die Hard and Predator are two incredibly re-watchable movies, more so than anything Nolan has ever done.

You never seen Predator or Die Hard?
Yeah, I've seen them, but I've never heard of the director.

Well, I've seen like probably 40% or so of Die Hard, I think. Could be more like 25-30%. Definitely not the whole thing. But I definitely watched Predator a bunch of times as a kid.

He did Hunt for Red October also, which was a shock to me. It is hard to separate direction from writing for me. 13th Warrior was bad, but I have no idea if it was just a bad story or direction.

I remembered Hunt for Red October as being good, but when I re-watched it recently it did not hold up. I honestly couldn't even finish it.

I've liked pretty much every Nolan movie ever made, with the caveat that I haven't seen Tenant.

It's an awesome movie. The Protagonist is a landlord/property owner of an upscale apartment complex in New York City. He rents the property to the "Tenant," who uses the property to conduct crazy dream within a dream experiments. One of those dreams involves the Protagonist, but instead of a landlord, he's actually a crime-fighting vigilante whose parents were murdered when he was a child. During WWII, the Joker organizes an airborne assault on British forces and, in an effort to evacuate troops, it is revealed that not only are the troops dying but the world itself is dying. As a result, the Tenant launches into space to find a suitable planet for the attacked troops to live, but he ends up on a planet with a guy who he thinks is a magician but actually just clones himself over and over with technology provided by Nikola Tesla. The electric shock from the tesla coils causes the Tenant to lose his memory but he slowly puts the pieces back together through a series of clues he left for himself. Finally, at the conclusion, we end up back in the leased apartment, and all we see is a 3-day eviction notice gently moving that is posted on the door. It turns out the 3-day notice is the Tenant's totem, but the movie ends before we know if the Tenant is in his apartment, outer space, or a clone of himself.

I don't know of any movies called 'Tenant' by Nolan.
He recently did 'Tenet' which is a very good movie; expecially if you like Nolan's mind bending flicks.

The fact that it doesn't exist is probably a good reason as to why I haven't seen it. But Jeebus' movie does sound pretty damn entertaining...

what's with these threads comparing directors that have no business being compared? McTiernann and Nolan? not at all the same type of movies. R Scott and Jackson? the fuck?

Nolan and Ridley Scott makes more sense. (I'd say it's still Ridley Scott)

McTiernan and Wolfgang Peterson, or hell, Michael Bay makes more sense. (Peterson...maybe.)

Jackson and Sam Raimi, makes sense (Raimi).

....where is the thread asking us to compare Mark L Lester and Sofia Copolla?

McTiernan

For me its not close with Nolan .... the Dark Knight movies were just okay IMO and that was his peak. More recently he's made some real steaming piles.

This guy. Agreed, what is the point of trying to say who is better? One major point you are missing is that they are very different from each other.

I'll just leave this here.

Tenet (written by) 2017
Dunkirk (written by) 2014
Interstellar (written by) 2013
Man of Steel (story) 2012
The Dark Knight Rises (screenplay) / (story) 2010
Inception (written by) 2008
Ghajini (based on a screenplay by) 2008
The Dark Knight (screenplay) / (story) 2006
The Prestige (screenplay) 2005
Batman Begins (screenplay) 2000
Memento (screenplay) 2000

Nolan not only directed, but he wrote or created the screenplay for all those movies. Not to take anything away from McTiernan, but they are just different.

Don't forget he's also responsible for Batman vs Superman. ;)

All I went by was how much I've enjoyed their movies though ... its not really apples-to-apples.
