SuperFetch + Intelligent Caching : Could Vista be the first Windows to run BETTER over time?

SunnyD

Belgian Waffler
Honestly, with all the caching and indexing my laptop has done over the last week with Vista on it, performance-wise I can't complain.

But it dawned on me today, being in IT support I get a lot of "SunnyD, my system is just running dog-ass slow now. It used to be way faster than this!" And as I sit here moving files around in Vista, I recall the notion that Vista is supposed to record and cache typical access patterns for a user. Could this possibly mean this Vista will be the first incarnation of Windows that actually begins to perform better as time goes on?

No, and the reason is that users will still bypass UAC prompts to install WatchMeSodomizeAYoungDonkey.mpeg.exe, thus loading their systems down with as much spyware as they would have had under XP. I think Microsoft is trying, and I'm not in a position to say whether they could have done better or not, but I still think that dumb users will be the downfall of Vista, yet again. 🙁

Well, if you know what you're doing XP doesn't get slower over time...

My only hope is that the inclusion of Windows Defender and UAC will help. Unfortunately I'm sure people will either ignore all the warnings or programmers will find a way around it.

I'm not worried about my computer getting slower over time, but I'm sure the same people who mess up their XP systems will mess up their Vista systems.

One of my friends ran a devious shell script on his mac that wiped out half his system...it prompted him for root priv's and he entered his password.

Bye, Bye... no system is secure when people are idiots. My friend said, "I though there were no viruses on linux / OS X."

I told him the script is not a virus... but that doesn't mean there is not nasty software out there that can harm your system if you let it.

and OS is the one being blame all the time.........

Too bad we can't convince the gov't to require classes and licenses for operation of computers like we have with cars.

A lot of good that would do - most of the drivers on the road today aim and steer their cars anyway - and have little regard for the "rules" of the road or good driving habits.

Speed Limits - ignore them
Stop Signs and Red Lights - run them
Bad weather conditions - go faster
Cell Phones - talk to your hearts content
Maintaining Cars - I'll take it to the shop when it breaks down.
Pedestrians/Cyclists - Why are they in my way anyway?
Which way do I steer if I get in a power slide - does it matter?
But I can't see? - thats Ok, you passed your last driving test 10 years ago when you could.

Thats what we have populating our nations roads - with regulations.

Added: OS makers can't protect the user from themselves - but they can at least make it a challenge for them to break a system. Some Os' are better at that than others and make people go out of their way to do so.

I would hope that most drivers aim and steer their cars. And I never said that getting a driver's license wasn't too easy but most people put forth some effort to learn how to operate the vehicle even if they don't follow the regulations after the fact. When someone runs a red light and causes an accident they don't blame the car (unless something actually failed) but whenever something happens to their machine they blame the OS or the Internet.

You are misguided there, most drivers when they get in an accident blame it on virtually ANYTHING except driver error. I ride a bicycle regularly , so I see first hand all too well the actions that "licensed" drivers exhibit - and they aren't found in any Driver's Ed course I've ever seen.

Common accident responses:

"I never saw the other car" - hard to do when you are doing your make-up, eating, drinking or holding a face-to-face conversation in your car instead of keeping you eyes focused on the task at hand
"I never heard anything" - hard to do when the stereo is blasting or the cell phone is demanding your attention
"I couldn't stop in time" - hard to do when the driver isn't keeping a safe following distance to begin with or driving too fast (especially in residential areas)
"I lost control" - keep two hands on the steering wheel and pay attention when you drive and you won't lose control

A good OS will make it difficult for a user to accidently do something they will regret later - but for users like those above it won't matter anyway.

BTW, theres a lot more to driving a car than just pointing it in the right direction (i.e Windows users with their point and click interface). If they don't know where they are going before they put that car in motion everyone around them on the road is at risk for some sudden unexplained behavior - like U-turns, sudden stops, panic last second turns, etc.
