Supercool, the Mars Rover is still on the move.

After surviving the Martian winter, the lone surviving Martian rover that landed in 2004 is still on the move.

The little engine that could continues to amaze as it surpasses its design life in perhaps the greatest scientific bargain in history.

As it now zero's in on answering new questions regarding clay deposits.

Pardon me if I am simply amazed and blown away. At the energizer bunny on Mars that keeps going going and going.

Design team, please take a well deserved bow.

Probably somewhat of an understatement, but NASA knows their shit. The Voyager probes have been working continuously since 1977.

Nasa even admitted that they got extremely lucky by having dust devil clean away the solar panels.

Still a great piece of engineering though.

Since landing in 2004, Opportunity has surpassed expectations. Its twin Spirit lost contact in 2010 not long after it got stuck in a sand trap.
LOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sand traps are the curse of existence for ever human golfer. So it is on earth and Mars. But in heaven there is no beer, that's why we drink it here, even if we just rent it.

To be fair, it's solar cells continuously recharging.

Curses, foiled again, the spelling police always foil my evil plots.

Its the story of my life, here I want to be dudley do right, and end up being Snidely Whiplash instead.

Soon it will be joined by its big brother Mars Science Laboratory. Unfortunately MSL won't last as long 🙁 (it isn't solar powered)

Nasa generally over-designs. If they were efficient, the rover would have been 10 times cheaper and only lasted a year.

We have learned far more valuable information then we ever could have if it only lasted a year. IF this is over design, then over design is good.

Im excited for the Curiosity rover, due to touch down in August. It contains three life experiments to test for present or past life on mars. It's also fairly large (mini cooper sized) and requires a small miracle to land safely with a retro-rocket attachment. If they are able to safely land that feat alone will be worthy of praise as well.

I didn't know about this, and this is more interesting than the tiny thing up there now to me 🙂 I'm sure it can be move quicker, less likely to get stuck, etc.

Unless they crash it while landing or drive it off a cliff ... Go to the NASA mission page on it, they have some photos of it along with detailing its capabilities.

MSL is nuclear powered so it should theoretically be able to last even longer. There's no danger of dust covering up solar panels.
