Yeah? Well, anyone's overclocked reference cards could have done that. Now we have FTW cards instead.
That's good customer service that they upgraded you guys. FTW is much better.

EVGA 670s are reference designed 670 or 680 cards. This card has binned GPU and premium components. At the very least it will have unbeatable noise levels even if it doesn't beat EVGA 670's overclocking.
I am not sure why you think that Asus DirectCU cards have been poor. GTX580 Top had insane overclocks on forums. I think DirectCU brand got a lot of negative press for their 7970 cards.
Asus Direct CU GTX570 broke 1Ghz on air. Sometimes it is luck of the draw though.
No i'm still waiting on it. Going to test it and sell it as i nabbed a pair of these 670's today
I had my eye on the Sapphire for a while but that card is getting a mixed bag of reviews and even professional reviewers have noted that it has coil wine. That's a deal breaker imo. If it didn't have coil whine in so many reviews/user feedback, I'd consider recommending it. 😀
The reason I mentioned reference 7970s is because I still can't believe they are going for $450-490. In light of the 670 Top card, those cards no longer make any sense. GTX670 Top = 680 in performance and costs $450, has premium components and one of the quietest fans....that's like having GTX680 performance with a quiet cooler for $450. Reference 7970s basically need to drop to $399 now to make any sense at all.
The biggest problem for AMD is that at stock speed for 1080P, GTX670 = HD7970 and GTX670 OC = GTX680 which means it's faster out of the box than the 7970. It's very difficult to sell a slower product for higher prices just because it overclocks better. That strategy has never worked. All great overclocking products became legendary because they sold for reasonable prices and could overclock well (Thunderbird XP1700+, Barton XP2500+, Q6600, 6800GT, 8800GT, 5850). HD7970 costs more than GTX670 but it needs to be overclocked to beat it. That's not leading price/performance, especially not when 670 beats it in modern games like BF3, SKYRIM, etc.
Until AMD drops prices, GTX670 will continue to cement its status as the 6800GT of this generation.
AMD will have to lower the price on the HD 7970 this month. It's a sales suicide to have a competitor that has a product that is the same speed, cheaper, and less power consuming and not react accordingly.
What they need to do is unlock it's full potential with the best driver release they can muster.
No wonder you said the fiance would be upset. Let me see, I think I have her number..
😛
I'd rather just go ahead and spend another $40 for the gtx680 than the listed price of the asus gtx670. That's just me though.
Why?
Its not surprising that an overclocked part surpasses the subsequent SKU, a 570oc can pass a 580, a 470oc can pass a 480, and so forth. Not surprising. Can a 670oc pass a 680oc? Unless the 680 just has a horrible chip, no. The 670 is minus an entire SMX unit so the 680 is better when oc'ed.
What does a 680 do that a 670 can't do just as well? This card has just made the 680 irrelevant to 99% of people who don't want the highest benchmarks.

it is a bit weird that ASUS overclocks best lately.
either coincidence, or engineering prowess, or....
or asus is just the best period
You don't know those chips are binned higher and TOP cards oc no better than any other unless they're a factory OC'd model. Basically if you like being charged more for nothing you buy an asus video card.
Gives me at least an extra inch per. So that's two more inches.
Why?

Yes, they are binned. The TOP designation guarantees it, unless you think Asus is straight up lying. That's how the DC vs. DCT cards differ actually. The DCT version costs more because the GPUs for that line have been binned specifically. It doesn't mean that a DCT card will overclock better than say Windforce 3X or Galaxy Dual fan because some of those cards can also randomly get a GK104 that happens to fall within the top 5%. However, within the Asus product stack, all TOP chips are specifically binned to achieve the highest overclocks for the Asus brand. This is similar to Black Edition binning by XFX.
"The TOP designation indicates a more complex and stringent GPU selection procedure, which entails extensive certification and validation. Only a relatively small percentage of the total chips assigned ASUS pass TOP certification."
The products are put under high resolution automated optical inspection (AOI) hardware for an extended certification stage that ferrets out any defects or flaws in manufacturing (special attention given to soldering and contact points, such as data interfaces).
I am not making this up out of thin air:

I had bought a Sapphire 7970, but I'm returning it, with my old 5850 now bridging the two. The 7970 in itself is good, but the drivers are ao bad it's virtually unusable. I didn't have issues with AMD's drivers before - my 5850 works flawlessly -, but it just discouraged me very much.
