Superatoms

I might consider this for my major...I'll be on my way to undergrad a year from now and I'm looking at material research as a major.
 
For example, a material that can be transparent typically won?t conduct electricity, and vice versa. But a suitable all-metal salt, say, might be able to do both. And with a stretch of imagination, all-aluminum salts could make airplanes with see-through fuselages possible. Almost as cool as a hot-fudge sundae.
Transparent aluminum, anyone?

Already been done aluminium oxynitride. Made the news a couple of years ago. Military was testing it for use in armored windows.
 
Rudy, take a look at Alfred University in Western NY, if you're interested in materials engineering. They're one of the leading universities in the world in some of their research areas. There are only 3 universities that teach glass science in the world; they're the only one in the U.S. As old as glass is, people don't realize how cutting edge the field is. I just took 7 of my juniors there last Friday for a tour (and to play with electron microscopes, etc.) - every one of them seemed quite interested in their programs after seeing them. There's a lot of bio-medical research going on within the glass and ceramic programs. (scaffolding for tissues & organs to grow on, etc.)

Because of the smaller size, they're pretty unknown to a lot of people. Last year, they had more companies recruiting for engineers (or at least in one of the engineering fields) on campus than they had engineers graduating. I'm not sure where they rank right now; they used to be #1 in the world in ceramic engineering (non-organic, non-metallic materials; from tooth and bone replacements to semi-conductors to space shuttle tiles to systems where a special glass is touched to the skin, and it tests for several types of diseases at once. Tuition for the engineering program is at the SUNY rate (under 10k per year; the rest of the university is a private school around 30k per year.)
 
Are these new materials going to be considered elements, and what's the periodic table going to look like if they make it on there?

No... they just behave like other atoms hence the name.
 
There are a lot of really cool things that can be done with these "super-atoms" - research has been going on with them for decades, although only recently, the term nano-science was applied to the research.

Everyone knows what the melting point of gold is, right? You can look it up in a book. Well, by controlling the size of the particles, you can make it melt at pretty much whatever temperature you want. (over a large range)

While we may not achieve a larger volume of discoveries from the Atoms Cube, we will have a larger percentage of higher quality discoveries, in comparison to say the Atoms Station, in my opinion.

Maybe so, but recent discovery suggests that the Atoms Wii is more prolific than the Atoms Station, and the Atoms 360.

Why? Nobody can disprove him. It's impossible. In fact, he will even give you a one thousand dollar if you can.
