Super Smash Brothers Brawl Delayed

Nintendo of America has notified us that one of the most anticipated games for the Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, has been pushed back. The game had been set for a release in early February (Feb. 10 to be exact), but now gamers will have to wait until March.

"The launch date for Super Smash Bros. Brawl has shifted a few weeks to March 9," a Nintendo spokesperson told us. "The development is taking slightly longer than expected. As we're sure you have seen on the Dojo site (www.SmashBros.com), the game contains an unprecedented number of characters, options and experiences. Be sure to keep an eye on the Dojo site for the latest information."

This is not the first time the game has been delayed. At its press conference at E3 last year, Nintendo promised that the title would make it out this December on time for the holiday shopping season. Then the game was pushed back to Feb. 10, 2008 by the time October arrived.

In addition to featuring standard characters such as Mario, Pikachu and Kirby, Super Smash Bros. Brawl also stars new playable characters such as Meta Knight from the Kirby games, Pit from Kid Icarus, Zero Suit Samus from Metroid: Zero Mission, Wario and, even Solid Snake from Metal Gear and Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog. The game is also one of few Wii titles that will take advantage of online play.

Update: To make the delay even a more bitter pill to swallow

Perfect Score From Famitsu

As if you couldn't be any more excited for Super Smash Bros. Brawl: NeoGAF has scans from Famitsu magazine that show that the game has received a perfect 40/40 review score.

The four reviewers praised the lengthy single-player mode ("you forget the time") and the "surprising" Final Smash super moves.

Yes, it's generally agreed upon that Famitsu scores, and the vast majority of other Japanese magazine coverage, are mostly determined by the exchange of money or other considerations that fall outside of independent editorial judgment.

But Famitsu only very rarely gives this score out, and historically it's only been to one game per console. This is only the seventh 40/40. The others went to The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time, Soul Calibur, Vagrant Story, Zelda: Wind Waker, Nintendogs, and Final Fantasy XII.

Point is, no matter how this score came about, this is an excellent sign for Smash Bros.' chances in Japan. Note that the review text still carries the original ship date of January 24, meaning that the delay must really have been a last-minute decision. Speculation on NeoGAF that Nintendo couldn't produce enough copies of the game to meet retailers' unexpectedly high pre-orders would suggest that this one is going to explode out of the gate.

Plus, the commercials feature transvestites. What's not to love?

I bet they're having problems with the online portion, because they have no experience with online stuff.

Nah, balance updates can always be tweaked with patches... oh wait. 😉
I'm totally kidding. 🙂

This game is going to have some hefty expectations.... it had better deliver or Nintendo is going to get a ton of backlash for it... at least from their older non-casual gamer fan base.... argh

I'm not going to pretend to know what it takes to make a video game, but as far as concepts go, SSB seems like it would be a fairly easy game to make (I use easy in a relative sense obviously). Fairly small levels keep the amount of artwork to a minimum, and 20 or 30 characters. Although I suppose Nintendo does a good job of making all the characters unique in their abilities which would require a pretty robust game engine to run on.

especially since theyve already made it a few times before?

I wouldn't be surprised it if was two things. As modeps said, nintendo sucks in the online department. why is the shopping channel SO DAMN SLOW. The second, possibly fine tuning how the wii remotes will work.

or they're adding mega man.

Bummer, I was really looking forward to some Brawl in February. 🙁

But I'd rather them take their time and do it right than rush this out the door.

Yep, already got plenty of games to play.

Although the delay is rather confusing. Theyre delaying it in japan AND the US. It was merely delayed a week in japan to Jan 30th. I'd imagine the delay isnt due to localization, so if it really is just polish, you'd have thought that a 1-week delay in japan would = no delay in the US, not a 2 WEEK delay.

My son is going to be EXTREMELY unhappy with this news. This is the game he has been waiting for and waiting for. His birthday is January 26 and he said he'd wait until February 10th for his present. Oh boy...

Soul Calibur
Vagrant Story
Zelda: Wind Waker
Nintendogs
Final Fantasy XII

I assume you were talking about Seaman, which isn't on there.

Fam has a tendency to be a little crazy with their ratings. Out of 7 titles on their list, 4 of them are Nintendo games... and come on, Nintendogs?

Still, Its nice to see at least one good review for the game. 🙂

It doesnt take a month to crank out another few hundred thousand copies. That can be done in a day or two. We're talking about mass production of DVDs, not consoles.

Besides, after the not as impressive as they hoped first week of mario galaxy, I'm not so sure theyre in a rush to over produce the game.

But I've said it before, and I'll say it again...theres nothing I like to hear more than that a game is delayed. A delay is a committment to quality. A delay never makes a game worse, only better. There are thousands of other games to play, I'm sure we could all find one to tide us over another month, knowing that when it comes out, it'll be even better for it.

Although I'm not quite sure what the game could be possibly missing at this point, since theyve got everything from online to achievements. All it really needs is real DLC (not just the levels), and it wouldnt surprise me if they actually pulled that off. How bad ass would that be to be able to DL new characters and stages?

Ahh my bad. It was Endless Ocean and they gave it 35/40. I thought I heard on a podcast that they gave it 40/40. Anyway just look at that game and tell me Famitsu isn't worthless.

P.S. I'm sure brawl will be close to perfect though. It is 1st party nintendo AAA after all.

It should be interesting to note that the founder of Sora, the company dev'ing SSBB is a weekly writer for Famitsu 🙂
