Super Paper Mario (Wii)

So my fiance really loved the first mario when she was younger. She played some of the newer marios, but wanted a nostalgic sidescroller mario. I rented Super Paper Mario from gamefly... wow... talk about complicated. The flipping is cool and makes sense, but leveling up, buying items, all the dialogue. I think its a bit complicated. She only played the first 2 levels so maybe it all fits later on.

The game is a sequel to Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door - which was a sequel to Paper Mario, which was a sequel to Super Mario RPG.

So, yeah, it's an action RPG.

just download some of the older stuff on Virtual Console from the Wii Shop.

The truest descendant of those games currently is Super MArio Bros. for the Ninetendo DS if you have one.

Super Mario World? You ask that like you haven't played it... surely that can't be the case! If you really have never played SMW buy it immediately. It's a classic and would be exactly what you're looking for.

Buy her a DSLite for Christmas w/ New Super Mario Bros. For Virtual Console, get Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World. Those two are w/o a doubt the best Super Mario games.

Super Paper Mario is a pretty fun game if you're willing to put up with it. It took me a while to beat because some of the puzzles can be really frustrating, not so much because they're complicated but because there will be a lot of back tracking and searching places you've already visited over and over again. The pit of trials is just plain hard. A word of advice: There's a god-damned dragon waiting for you at the end.

Still, I really liked the story and the dialog almost always got a laugh out of me (note: I smoke copious amounts of ganja before I play any video game.. ymmv) There are lots of mini/micro games sprinkled throughout the storyline. These are also fun. When you get to the arcade, the ghosthouse shooting game can become a great time waster in itself.

Left my fiance home for a day, and she played Super Paper Mario for 5 hours straight. She likes it. problem solved I guess. Getting super mario world this weekend.
