Super Micro Dual Xeon: 8 DIMM Slots

<< Up to 16 GB ECC registered DDR-200 memory in 8 DIMM slots >>

good god, 16 GB! where are you* going to find 2gb sticks of DDR? - And how are you* going to afford 8 of them?

*note: you != Galora, but whoever buys the board;

Is that an AGP slot? I mean I know AGP Pro slots are longer than ordinary AGP but that slot is longer than AGP pro. What is it AGP Pro 8x?
Oh, it says VXB slot ( Virtual extended bus). What the heck is that?

And lastly, anyone knows how much the monster is gonna cost?

No clue.

<< And how are you* going to afford 8 of them? >>

It's a high-end (well, not THAT high) server board. Businesses large enough to require such boards/CPU/RAM will be able to afford it.

<<And how does a 32bit CPU effective address over 2^32 = 4GB of memory?

Isn't 4GB the virtual addressing limit, not the memory caching limit?

Er, to be honest I've not a clue what you're on about MadRat 🙂 A 32bit processor supports 32bit words, so it can be from 0 to 4.2billion. So if it's using one word to represent a memory address you have a range of 4.2billion = 4GB of memory. Accessing any more requires each memory address to be represent by 2 words, i.e. 64bit. This'll cripple performance, will it not?

I saw 2 GB DIMM's for sale at one of our suppliers at work.

They were dual eight, double row(that is, the chips are stacked in two's on the sides), and sold as addons to Alpha boxes.

They cost ~12.700$ at the time, though that was like a year ago or something.

Holy Christ! :Q:Q:Q

Were those DDR?

The price of ram will change as new types of mem pop up, I'm sure a 2 gig stick wont cost nearly as much as you think it would by the time us common folk are able to get our hands on it.
