Super long ping? Or...help

UpgradeFailure

I just got a new modem, AND my connection fixed (Cable). It was down at the pole, but they got me back and going. I bought a modem before that, thinking my other one was dead (was time for a new one anyways). Well, i have my connection back but my download speeds are horrible. And Im trying to figure out if it's on the cable end, or my modem end. My downloads start out at around 750k, on avg, and hold for a few seconds. If the file is under 5 megs, it downloads super fast. but if i download something larger, and it needs a constant download, it drops down. Bad. After about 15 seconds, i'll hold steady at about 50k. It's horrible. Is there anyway to test my modem to see if it's the problem? Llike a 2 min ping? Or anything else? I'm using a Motorola SB5100

download something like pingplotter and ping www.google.com

If you are dropping packets the TCP window will close down to a very small number and your thruput rates will suffer.

otherwise, just go to a command prompt and "ping www.google.com -t" and see if you get any losses.
