as someone mentioned before. some people are getting 5% back because they are a 5 point charter member. it will say it at the bottom of the new card. i finally decided to activate my card and i called them and asked them how you become a 5 point charter member and this is what they said.

how do you become a 5 point charter member?
well, you can become one if you've payed all your bills on time and if you've been a loyal shell customer.

guess loyal can mean just about anything.

I've been a member since Nov 01 and never missed a payment, which I make in full every billing. So either, I haven't been a member long enough, haven't been paying them interest to make it worth while, or have not been charging a high enough amount.

I applied for the AAA card today anyway which offers 5% back at any station with the pay at pump option. If that comes through I probably dump the freedom card at 3%.

I have had a Shell Mastercard since 1985 and still got the '3% rebate' card. I sent an email to Chase customer service. Here is the reply I got:

We have received your inquiry regarding the features and benefits of
your new Chase Freedom card.

Please note that the 5% rebate was offered to a small group of former
Shell cardmembers who displayed a particular purchasing pattern.

We believe that by offering you 3% on ALL of your gasoline purchases,
you'll be receiving more value out of your Chase Freedom card than you
did with your Shell MasterCard or Visa card from Chase when you earned
5% on only one brand of gasoline.

We hope that you'll enjoy your new Chase Freedom card by earning a 3% on
all of your gasoline purchases and a 1% rebate on everything else.

this sucks..chase has no clue on why some people get 5% and others get 3% here's my conversation with chase regarding my bro.

me: i would like to cancel my card.
chase: why

me: becuase you no longer offer 5% rebate on gas.
chase: well sir we no longer offer 5% rebate but we do offer a 3% on all you gas purchase and 6% untill march31

me: if i cannot get 5% like my brother has I want to cancel my account.
chase: i cannot help you with that let me get a supervisor.

chase super: why do you want to cancel
me: becuase you no longer offer 5% on shell gas my bro get 5% how come i don't

(First excuse)
chase super: that was for a select group that has been with chase for a certain period of time.
me:well i 've been a customer longer than my brother(I refered him to shell) so why is it that i don't get 5%

(here comes the second excuse)
chase super: let me check and see...a few minutes go by...well sir the 5% was only for charter members of chase shell card.
me: I was a charter member of chase, why i'm i not getting 5%

(here comes number three)
chase super: well sir 5% was offered to original shell gas card holder not visa or MC offered through chase.
me: my brother never had just the shell gas card so why does he get 5%. You know what just cancel my card.

chase super: sure no problem

if i pushed any further i bet i could have gotten a forth excuse...bastards. At this point, I was just pissed and canceled. I'm going to citi. I will pay 1 or 2 cents more in so cal for shall but i can put up with but not that crap chase is feeding me.

if enough people call and cancel maybe chase will get the message.

I'm guessing "particular purchasing pattern" = those who made the largest profit for Chase through finance charges? Then again, every time I come up with a possible explanation, someone else comes along who got the 5% rebate, has been a member for only 2 years, and always pays their Chase bills in full.

Obvious to me that it the amount of purchasing that is the major factor in getting 5%. I'm just not sure what the treshold is.

A fellow worker and I both got 3%. I've had the card 15 months, him 5 years. We both primarily used it just for gas, didn't charge much on it and paid the bill in full every month, never missed any payments.

Another worker got 5%. He had his card for 5 years, paid his balance in full every month, never missed payments, but said he charged everything he possibly could to that card usually $500/month minimum.

So somebody needs to call the chase CSRs to tell them how you qualify for 5% since it appears they don't know themselves.

I applied for the AAA VISA, although it is only valid for 5% for "pay at the pump" gas, and only available in certain areas.

I am a 5-point charter member with 5% any gas rebate. See if this makes sense:

1. I always pay my balance in full.
2. I have a MasterCard.
3. I've been a member for only 2-3 yrs.
4. I did not have a standard Shell gas card.
5. I frequently have over $1000 balance on my monthly statement. Once or twice went over $5,000.

I think this thread already dismissed #1, 2, 3 and 4. Maybe #5 is the pattern they are looking for. Then again, they could just be drawing straws.

I will cancel but after the 6% bonus is over, maybe they will have their act together by then. If not, I will switch over to Citi to get their 10% bonus and keep the card for good. By offering me 3% as opposed to 5%, it means they don't really care for my business, maybe I needed to charge more than the $12000 that I did last year and made every payment in full on time. I use mainly Shell gas anyway so switching to Citi is no big deal.

AAA 5%:
You'll earn one point for every purchase dollar spent. Each time you reach 5,000 points, we'll send you a $50 voucher that is redeemable at any AAA branch for virtually anything available at AAA.

What can people buy at AAA anyway besides vacation packages, membership, some travel accessories... I will pass.

1, 2, and 4 are true in my case too. For 3, I have had the card for 18 years. For 5, I have charged on an average $1,000 to $3,000 a month on the card. Don't recall being over $5,000 at any time. Still, the yearly average has been pretty high. But it did not get me the 5% card, so who knows what the criteria is. And their CSRs certainly have no idea either.

Ok thanks all168. Here in Nor Cal. Shell prices are ok when the prices go easy..... but with the rising prices it becomes unworthy for the 5% rebate..... 10% might still be good. Initially I thought it was a card offered by Citibank itself. looks like I still have to stick with Discover with 1%

???

Rising prices mean MORE savings based on 5%. @$2/gal you save 10 cents per gallon. @$1.30/gal you save 6.5 cents.

Granted it costs more overall even with bigger savings, but I haven't found a way to get around that yet.

The link for the freedom card requires you to enter your old Shell account number, since I'm just shopping anyone able to tell me for sure what their deal is?
One person said 3/1% while someone else said 5/1%......

True enough for that theory but it only works when all gas prices are the same. If shell is selling 1.81/G now and Chevron at 1.73/G then my rebate is the moment I pull in to Chevron for gas. In the past few months I have also been getting Shell as their prices are the same as chevron..... and here in bay area there is not mobil or exxon, don't think I saw texaco too......

Is there a good credit card with rebate/cash-back for Chevron gas purchases? (i only get gas at chevron stations)
Currently, chevron cards do not offer any rebates on gas purchases :disgust:

I wish CitiBank teamed up with Chevron that'd be frickin' awesome.
