Strange, my page says 3 percent back on any gas purchase, one percent on any other purchase. With 6 percent on gas purchases thru Mar 31.

I have the regular card, not platinum.

Are others really getting 5 percent back on gas? Do I need to call chase and as "where's the love?"?

Looks like you still get 5% rebate on gasoline purchases but you can buy any brand of gasoline you choose!! So this is super hot!!!

From now until March.31st, 2003 you also get an extra 1% back on your gasoline purchases so that makes it a total of 6%!!

This is definitely better than the old card!

um, not exactly

" 3% on all of your gasoline purchases... on any brand of gasoline
1% on all of your other purchases

And as one of the first Chase Freedom cardmembers, you'll earn a 6% rebate on all gasoline purchases posted to your account through March 31st, 2003!! "

so it's better till 3/31/03, then go back to the 5% shell card from citibank

it's the same acct. #

the only differnce is the name of the card. the new card will no longer have the shell logo. theoretically, you can still use your old shell card till the expiration date. mines is 2005 :p but the rebate is now only 3% (6% until 3/31/03)

here's how to maximize the 2 deals (chase and citibank cards):

1) Chase card 6% till 3/31/03

2) Citibank 10% for 60 days after it's activated. must apply by 3/31/03. apply now, but dont activate the card till the next time you need to fill up after 3/31. (activating the card = calling the 800 # thats usually on the sticker on the front of your card)

Wonder if anyone knows the criteria for the 3% as opposed to the 5% after March 31st. My roommate got the 5%, while I got the 3%. I know that I have a better credit rating, and don't carry any balances. Maybe the latter is the deciding factor?

XFILE, thanks for the link to the new Citibank Shell Mastercard. This one makes a great replacement for the old one. I didn't read all the fine print, but did you see if they do monthly rebates like the old one too?

5% on all of your gasoline purchases... on any brand of gasoline.

1% on all of your other purchases.

And as one of the first Chase Freedom cardmembers, you'll earn a 6% rebate on all gasoline purchases posted to your account through March 31st, 2003!

The rebates you earn each month are automatically credited towards your future purchases. Spend your rebates anyway you like!

You'll receive your new card and program details by mid-February. You are already earning valuable rebates. Use your Shell MasterCard® or Visa® card from Chase until you receive your new Chase Freedom card.

For Frequently Asked Questions about your new Chase Freedom card, please click on the button below.

Same 5% rebate. No longer restricted to the expensive Shell brand. Use the cash back on anything. Much better than the old shell mastercard. :D

Too bad costco only takes AE. Would be nice if we could use the freedom card at costco! oh well, costco is too far from my house anyway.

I still wonder how they base the 3% and 5%. I have 3% too and I have Shell Platinum for 4-5 years and I always pay in full.

I have 3% also. :frown: Can anyone call them up and ask? Use "my friend gets 5% and how come I only get 3%". I want 5% on all gasoline purchases.

Chase's phone solicitation was a deal breaker for the gas promotion, didn't matter how many times that I told them not to call, they did anyways...

BJ's discount gas is fine with me, you get an IMMEDIATE discount at the pump.

As I remember, Costco gas station also takes other credit cards than AE.

EDIT:
Oh, wait!
I checked on Chase web site just now, and I got 5% off all gasoline purchase!
I have the regular yellow card and do carry some balance.
Seems like I don't need to get the new card from Citi then.

I got my card today. Looks very patriotic and it's called "Freedom" hahaha.

6% off all gas until the end of March, 3% off all gas thereafter. I like this better than 5% off Shell gas only.

I dont know the criteria.... but here is my assumption:

My Shell VISA changes into a 5% rebate Freedom card
My friends Shell MASTERCARD changes into a 3% rebate Freedom card

maybe visa gets 5% while mastercard get 3%?

Well, I had the Shell MasterCard which changed to Chase Freedom MasterCard with 5% any gas rebate. Maybe you have to look at the bottom of the card. Mine says "5 point charter member".

Well, I am going to cancel the Freedom card after the 6% is over and get the Citi Shell. The cheaper brand stations like Speedway, or Meijer is only 1 - 2 cents cheaper. I have a habit of using Shell stations plus I like Citi's Virtual Account Number since I already have Citi's Platinum card. 10% for 90 days isn't bad either.

In some areas, CostCos have their own gas stations. And the prices are usually pretty good. Comparable to the no-name brand gas. In the San Jose, CA area, the gas station only have two grades of gas to choose from "regular" and "premium". You have to be a CostCo member to use them. You drive up to the pump, insert your CostCo card, and then you can use either ATM, or American Express card to pay.

looks like you need to apply for the Chase Freedom card over the phone.

When you click on this link Chase Freedom it bring you into the homepage for Chase issued credit cards. When you click on apply for card, there is no listing for the new Chase Freedom Card.

The number to call is 1-866-800-FRDM
