By the end of the summer I should have about 3500$ (CDN).

With a budget of 3500-4000, can someone who know's what's what, give me a suggestion for the best gaming computer please? I haven't really looked into it yet, and would like some suggestions from people with more knowledge than myself.

I'm not sure of the best site to do this so..help, please.

Click the Guides tab and scroll down to "Buyer's Guide: High End System - July 2004"

Also read a few of the system threads in this forum

1200.00 Phase change(with case and power supply)
799.99 AMD FX-53
350.00 1gig memory (either 2-2-2-5 at PC3200 for multiplier overclocking or Higher timing PC 3700 for FSB overclocking)
400.00 2 raptors
150.00 Audigy 2 ZS
400.00 20 inch CRT (I still prefer for hardcore gaming)
450.00 x800xt or 6800ult
150.00 939 PCI Express or AGP motherboard
300.00 at most7.1 Speakers (which ever is best at time)

Around $4000.00 (prices may be lower depending on time frame

Just what I would do. With that phase change you should get your FX-53 to 2800-2900 and your games will fly

You can definitely get it cheaper on ebay or using the older Asetek chillers. That is for the new Lightspeed and Lian Li. That is as expensive as you will get so I used that number

hardcore gaming is what he is after and wants to spend 3500 to 4000 dollars (albeit canadian)
Unless you are doing massive overclocking that is not a high end system like he was after.

y would you use a P4 on a super gaming rig? first off, the athlon64's are faster then pentiums at nearly everything besides encoding/decoding. they are also better off for gaming, just like intel is for encoding. i'm not being biased either.

anyways, i recommend you get:

athlon fx-53
abit k8t800 pro chipset socket 939 motherboard
1gb ocz low latency
nvidia geforce 6800 ultra or radeon x800 xt
dell 2001FP 20.1" LCD monitor (16ms) or samsung 17" 12ms lcd (forgot the name)
western digital 74gb raptor 10,000rpm
logitech mx duo
wutever case you want (i recommend antec sonata or cooler master wave master)
antech 480W psu
klipsch promedia 2.1 speakers (unless you want 5.1, go logitech)

anyways, this is about what i would get if i were you. if you cant fit it all in your budget, i suggest you get the samsung lcd, for that its hundreds cheaper. :)

I would definitely go with the 939 FX-53 and not the 940 FX-53 becuase of the newer motherboard features and no need for registered dimms and better upgradability in the future though AMD said they would support 940 you never know. The 939 will have at least a two year shelf life

I would go with the Nividia 6800GT if you are getting the x800pro. From what I have seen it may be a better option. I assume those are Canadian prices. Dear God it is so much more money. Yikes

I forgot the NEC DVD burner in my system rig post. Thanks for reminds I needed someway to install Mandrake 10 and Windows XP

the GT wasn't an option, but i would for sure go with that too, i'll edit it for the 939 fx-53

no GT option damn. Those are Canadian prices right?

If you can possibly swing get a raptor. Much faster performance. Just one, you don't really need raid. Do you have an older computer with a hardrive you could use allowing the raptor 74g to be the main drive and the older drive to be your mp3, backup drive etc?

can you show a link to your edit? Also just noticed. Don't get the PC4200 ram because you are not doing major overclocking and the AMD's don't really overclock at 1:1 in memory that highly. I would go with a lower frequency, lower latency memory like OCZ EB 3700 or even Corsair 3200 2-2-2-5.

With some luck and really good air cooling you may be able to turn your FX-53 into a FX-55 with some extra voltage and great (i.e. loud) air movement

If you are gaming get 1gig of ram. Trust me. With Doom 3 and newer games 1gig is a priority

good luck trying to get 4 dimms to work (with no sarcasm but real hope). Make sure they are single sided and that they are on the compatibility list. You may lose some speed because the bios changes the 1t memory turnaround to 2t with four dimms causing about a 10-15% decrease in memory (and system performance). You are better off with 2 512's in my opinion

That is more how I would go, except I hope the 3500 and 3800 come down to sane levels. If you don't need the extra space one raptor 74g would make a huge difference in your game load times vs the Barracuda but it is smaller at 74gigs. Otherwise I think you are ready to rock and roll. Also, if the AGP/PCI lock works on the ASUS (it should but with Via you never know) you could probably get 233 x10 for 2330 out of your 3500 on good cooling and increase your memory bandwidth nicely. It takes a little work and trial and error. Even at stock you should be zipping along and in the future a cpu replacement will be available to simply pop in.

To bad you had to drop from a FX to 3500 but with a little easily doable overclocking you will approach 3800 speeds and enjoy high end gaming for awhile

Oh, I think he left awhile ago. Shows how sleepy I am lol. I am deciding whether to get the phase change 3500+ 1gig mem, ASUS 939 board, and a raptor to go with my x800xt I ordered. I just don't know.
