Large companies are also examining larger systems for testing and simulation. Procter & Gamble, for example, uses an SGI system to study the aerodynamics of Pringle's potato chips, Snell said. The chips move along a conveyor belt so fast that they actually take flight. Through aerodynamic modeling, the company can change the shape of the chips and speed up manufacturing. P&G also uses the system to study fluid dynamics in disposable diapers.

wtf?

My roomate works for P&G. This is the sort of stuff that saves a surprising amount of money. Little design tweaks can end up saving you millions a year because of the volume most P&G products are made in. Pretty cool if you ask me.

that's pretty cool! though shouldn't they be using that computing power for something maybe a little more useful........like DC progs?

Using a computer to shape a potato chip.........., bit on the retarted side :frown:. I wonder if the Dorito company needs any assitance

. Here's a good start, DONT SHAPE THE ONE OUNCE CHIP LIKE A SINGULAR WINGED GLIDER.

Interesting... Maybe they could design a very large, commercial pringle that will fly from NY to LA. It would be perfect because for once, airline food would actually be good.

Improves efficiency, hurts no one. Good use of one. I know of many SC's used for worse projects

Exactly, anything improvement in manufacturing line regarding time, utilization, and efficiency of the machine helps company saves money. Any $$$ saved will benefits consumer even though it first will benefits the owner of the company and the stockholders :)
