When it comes to market, the chip will likely be sold to consumers as a co-processor -- an add-on PCI card that works in parallel with a PC's main processor, just like an add-on graphics card. But instead of boosting graphics performance, the chip will help compute intensive math calculations.

Similar capabilities are already built into Apple's G4 and G5 Macs, which have a floating-point co-processor called AltiVec, which handles complex, data-intensive calculations for the main processor. But whereas AltiVec is four-way parallel, ClearSpeed's chip is 64-way, the company said.

Color me pessimistic, but I seem to recall a previous announcement of a product called "Total mPower" by a company called "Total Impact" making similar claims of "PCI cards with quad G4 processors", etc, etc,.. and where are they now?

I saw this earlier, most of these things never make it all the way to market - of course if this one does and it's as good as they claim everyone will need at least a half a dozen of them eh?

Do you know how many times I've seen these stories in that past 20 years... By the time they get them to market, if they survive that long, the product is little more than an overpriced second rate computer on a PCI card.

If it is true and this does hit the market with the performance stated, this is the next "big" technology step that computing hasn't crossed in some time. I am pessimistic about it actually happening, but damn would it be sweet!!

We have just received our first batch of processors back from
manufacturing and are testing them now. So far the results are wonderful
and we expect to begin shipment of development boards and software tools
in December.

The initial development board will enable users to plug it into an
existing PCI slot in a PC allowing the acceleration of software normally
run on Intel or AMD processors. Of course, portions of that software
must be ported to our architecture. We are hopeful that developers will
begin to prepare their applications to use our architecture.

We will provide these PCI boards with the choice or one or two
ClearSpeed CS301 processors on them and multiple boards could be placed
in a single PC, providing 100s of GFLOPS in one PC.


The Development kit with our PCI board including the CS301 chip and our
software tools is budgeted to cost $25,000. The cs301 chips in volume
are being budgeted at $1,000 each.

I'm still curious how they can pump enough data through the pci buss to keep something supposedly that fast busy. even a 66mhz 64bit pci slot wouldn't be fast enough for symetrical processing.
