super cheapo motherboard/cpu combo

i messed up an old computer (took the processor out put it back in wrong and now it wont boot up. hehe) my dad didnt get to tweaked but now i got to buy a new processor and mobo. its for an old emachines previously celeron 500 mhz but now i must get a new mobo too because they dont sell 370's anymore. reccomendations? i was thinking a 1.8 ghz celeron @newegg for 55 bucks oh yea and some well needed advice on installing a motherboard and cpu.

Make sure the eMachines can accomodate a standard-size motherboard (some OEMs do weird things that prevent you from doing this), if you choose to upgrade that. Just find an old P3 (used is fine) that accomodates your board (see if it's a slot or socket interface). One of these should be pretty cheap from FS/FT or Ebay.

For how to install stuff (it doesn't cover slot processors, though), do a Google search for "mechBgon" and you'll get the guide written by the AT Elite Member of that name.

a just bought an Abit VA-20 motherboard with onboard sound, video, networking, USB2.0, SATA, basic overclocking, etc for $54 shipped and a Sempron 2400 retail w/heatsink+fan for $63 shipped. that makes the total $117 for both. considering i am running my setup at 180FSB (~2600 speeds, up from 166 default) and everything runs smoothly, i'd consider it money well spent for a cheap/good computer foundation.

that emachine's psu was marginal with its old load ..don't put new hardware in that emachine heap
