Don't worry, The NFL will shut it down.

Haha Yea I knew someone would bring that up. I was really sad to hear the NFL would do that, surely they knew the bad pr they'd get.

A lot of church's have nice multimedia setups (this is not a critique in anyway, just saying). They probably have projectors that could display the game well to a large group of people. And I don't think a lot of church's are about sitting politely and watching quietly during the game, they aren't stupid they know it's sports. It'll probably be more 'family friendly' just like most public settings where anyone would be invited would be.

I volunteer as the IT Director for a small church w/ 300ppl. We have dual projectors (>80") and hosted a superbowl party a couple years ago. Just a place to hang out with friends, enjoy good food, and football during halftime. No alcohol/cussing. It's not that hard to be civil.

That would be so awkward, who would actually go to this?

i have heard of such things

i don't think it is the proper use of a tax exempt religious facility
why?

violating laws doesn't seem like it fits the "mission statement" of most religions
as far as i know, most religions teach that you obey the laws of the govt.
and violating copyright laws , to me, doesn't seem to fit into the role of religion
the boy scouts gather at boy scout camp to watch the world series. that's wrong, huh?

yes, the world series broadcast is owned by major league baseball and public viewing is covered by the same copyright law as the super bowl/NFL

in fact the same law applies to public showings of DVD's , so if a church or other group want to show a DVD , like Toy Story or something to a group, that violates the copyright law as well

any church group is a "public event" and falls under those laws

I saw a church sign the other day which read, "With God every Sunday is Super Sunday"

So yeh, churches host parties in their basements or other rooms off the main part. In fact, there might even be some beer. :Q

What church do you attend that they would serve beer?
What is beer teh devil? How come wine is considered sacred, but beer has a bad rap.
I see nothing wrong with a minister/pastor/priest/clergyman having a couple of beers at a superbowl party.

and yes, i have witnessed such. at my aunt's 50th birthday party her pastor drank a beer with us. it was no bigee.

Exactly. Not sure where people got that Christians aren't allowed to drink. Numerous instances of drinking are in the Bible, and in fact Paul encourages someone (Timothy I think, maybe a whole church) to drink some wine to settle their stomach or something like that.

Point being, in no way is it sinful to drink alcohol. To get completely trashed, however, is a different story.

For those who are Catholic and especially drinking is usually a part of most festivals. This is especially true for German Catholics like myself.

well... come on though, as long as the event isn't used in profit making (such as a bar) then i don't see anyone getting in trouble over it as this kind of broadcasting for a group happens all the time all over.

I get the impression that you are just kinda making up what churches should teach to fulfill your argument.

To the best of my knowledge there aren't any passages in the bible that deal with copyright laws. You may also remember a couple portions of the bible about a guy named Jesus and another named Moses that outright disobeyed the ruling class (that's era's form of "Government") in favor of God.

Dare I contribute that numerous Monasteries fund themselves by making alcoholic products.

Monks preserved brewing technology through the middle ages. If it weren't for them there would be no beer. or it would have had to be reinvented

They go together anyway. Sports and religion are the two things that work best to distract the ordinary person from real problems. Why do you think the Roman emperors put on gladiatorial fights and built temples?

I'm an atheist and I think that the NFL's position is bullshit. I think there should be an exemption for non-profits and religious organizations AS LONG AS those orgs don't charge & use the $ money for fundraising.

Apparently it's legal as long as the TV isn't bigger than 55". OP didn't say what size the TV was.

Copyright laws are so screwed up, breaking them might well be a moral imperative.;)

why would it be awkward? Who knows maybe God is a huge Patriots fan.

Doubtful. Every Patriots victory is clearly a blow AGAINST truth, justice, and freedom. The Patriots losing this Sunday will open the floodgates of hope for a world shrouded in darkness. If the Patriots win, that will clearly indicate that the end times are approaching.

The church where i used to live had Super Bowl parties (Catholic). It was hosted by the mens club and held in the Rec Room. They had beer, a large screen TV you just had to bring a snack (wings, chips etc to feed about 4 others). They were usually sort of fun.

It is "illegal" and IIRC there was a Church in Indianapolis that got a Cease and Desist letter directly from the NFL last season for doing this. It was posted here... check the archives.
Its the same as any movie theater that broadcasts the games on their screen on Sundays (free admission but snacks/drinks you have to pay for). The NFL shuts down that practice too. The arguement is that if the screen is over XYZ size then its illegal. Thats how sports bars car get away with it.

Couple of theaters here in Milwaukee area got shut down for showing weekly Packers games in this manner. Its RIDICULOUS of the NFL. Just stupid.
