Super AMOLED vs IPS LCD

AMOLED all the way. Better contrast, and (theoretically) lower power consumption.

Lower power consumption if true, is nice, but ultimately I don't care about that as much in an individual component. It's the overall device that matters. If phone A with IPS but has more battery life than phone B with amoled, I'd prefer phone A's battery life obviously.

This was one of my complaints regarding software buttons.

It's a complaint against AMOLED, not software buttons. It's not as if the status bar is magically unaffected. Pentile arrangement made it even worse. You won't have that issue on a N4 or other IPS screen with soft buttons.

I'll miss the midnight blacks, but like I said, LCD has come a long way in the last year and a half.

The OP mentioned the use will be for "cinema".

I will repeat that if the usage is for 3rd party MKV video, the iPad is not a good choice, regardless of the display technology.

OTOH, if it is for iTunes video, then the iPad is the only choice of course.

Where do you think Nokia is getting the or panels then? I know for a fact that the Lumia 900 had the exact same panel as the SGS2.

There are other OLED panel manufacturers...

I have heard very good things about the screen in the Moto X and GS4.

Doesn't change my stance in this particular debate, but screen technology is also not a dealbreaker for me. It's a strong consideration, but it's not a dealbreaker.

Buttons are, though. I'm looking at you HTC. Samsung as well, but mostly HTC.

There's an assumption that people fall into one camp or the other, but looking at the very best displays, I like both technologies.

I have a HTC One. The last AMOLED screen I had was on the Dell Venue Pro. Side-by-side comparison between the S4 and the One, I prefer the One's display, though. The difference isn't enough that I would be upset if I had the S4's screen.

AMOLED has some sweet advantages... But the crazy saturation of colors that Samsung does/doesn't do on purpose has ruined it for me. Every time I see AMOLED my brain automatically thinks crappy color representation, although it doesn't necessarily have to be.

I'll personally stick yo IPS displays as I trust them.

The Anandtech review just confirmed the Moto X is using a Samsung Super AMOLED panel.

No, I have a 3 year old Galaxy S and the screen is still fine. Besides IPS displays can suffer from burn in too, we have had to replace a iMac at work because of it.

I have never, not once, experienced this burn in that is being mentioned. And I have used a whole host of AMOLED devices from the Nexus S to the Galaxy Nexus to the S3 & S4.

That's good for you. I have it on my GNex for sure.

On a light colored full screen image, I can see exactly where my status and navigation bars were.

Personally I think the 720p AMOLED screen in the Note 2 was where AMOLED became good enough and the newer 1080p screens are certainly very good, though they're not going to be as bright as a good IPS screen.

One thing I do like about AMOLED screens are the smart notification features being added by OEMs where only part of the screen is lit up, even when the screen is 'off'. This way messages, time, etc can be shown without having to click on your phone and with minimal power draw.

I think the current gen 1080p screens, whether it be IPS or AMOLED, are like the C2D CPUs - reached a point where they're good enough for basically anyone and there becomes less incentive to upgrade based upon that one feature.
