Went to go see this movie last night. Steven Spielberg should have called this movie Goonies III meet ET. As it is really just a continuation of his past movie Goonies. Similarities to both these movies are:

Group of kids go on a search to save the town.
One of the kids is heavy set. “Chunk”.
One of the kids was a techno in Goonies, and one of the kids in Super 8 was some sort of explosive expert.
One of the kids is a hot girl.
Goonies has the secret in the attic and Super 8 has the secret in the school.
Both movies have the kids going through caves and passages to get to the sunken ship or the aliens hideout in Super 8.
Both movies had one parent who was concerned for their safety.
Everything turns out great at the end.

Overall, I would expect something more from Steven Spielberg than some sort of mix of Goonies and ET put together. The movie was predictable from start to finish. I don’t recommend this movie.

Thanks for the review. In other words it sounds like the perfect movie for an 11 or 12 year old boy. That's about how old I was when I saw "Goonies" and I loved it. Good to know the target audience of this movie.

Goonies III? What happened to II?

Wasn't Spielberg just a producer? Isn't Abrams the writer and director?

Honestly though, that actually sounds appealing to me. I actually had pretty much no interest in this movie before (not a big Abrams fan, and Spielberg is pretty hit and miss for a while now).

Someone on IMDB describe it as ET meets Goonies meets The Sandlot, and that sounds pretty cool to me personally, provided they're talking about the positive aspects of those movies.

Huge letdown. Was hoping for better, but apparently not.

It was sort of a horror flick. The movie is very anti government. The alien was intelligent and just looking to phone home, I mean go home. The spider shaped alien was normally in the shadows or dark and it was always difficult to get a good look. Usually, you would just see it scatter across the street. The movie is due out shortly. I had screener passes.
