FYI.. Sun... Open sourced StarOffice last year, and a new team of programmers has taken the code and started to make improvements...
Like the first thing they did was break it into separate applications just like MS Office, a separate spreadsheet, wordprocessor, presentations, groupware/email etc... so it does not "take over" the desktop anymore...

Openoffice.org for more info... they already have released a couple of versions based on the code released to them by Sun..
They are also spearheading the development of an offical XML standard document specification for all office applications to be able to share the same file formats, and guarenteed to be able to read each others files.
