500VA should be plenty. Price $58 shipped, here:

Here is a 500VA PowMax unit for $32.99, free shipping:

I just got a 1000VA from BJs, a little more expensive, but figure my phone will work for like a few weeks with a power outage :D

CompUSa has a Belkin 1100VA on sale for $80 AR. I just got mine yesterday and charged it up today. I'll go plug it in and see how long it lasts...

Well, pulled the plug at 8:05. Warning started going off at 10:40 which is a 5 minute warning I think. That's oever 2.5 hours running my Gizmo, Cable Modem, and Router.

That's what it's looking like. Got another half hour on "The Deal" before it goes away at midnight!
I'm surprised they didn't do a "Mother's Day" special for it though. I mean, they did it for "Cinco de Mayo". I think SunRocket might be a lovely gift for far-flung Mom's and their far-flung progeny.

I thought about it for my mom but went with the flowers/spa route myself.

probably too close to Memorial Day, plus they just ran it May 5, 6, 7, last week. A sales person told a customer that they'll have it again Mother's Day, but they did not. I would expect Memorial Day, though.

Has anyone else been screwed by SunRocket promising phones and then not delivering?

About a month ago I called to renew. I was hoping I could get either the two year for $199 deal, or the $99 for one year deal. I was about to cancel when all they offered me was 3 free months on the standard 13 months for $199 deal when they offered me in addition to the 3 free months 2 5.8 GHz phones. That was enough to convince me to renew. Three weeks later no phones. I call them and finally get someone in Sales (canada) last week and she tells me they screwed up and I was offered the phones erroneously. But she tells me that I was promised them and she'd see that I'd get them. One week later I get an email from SunRocket Member Services telling me that I'm not allowed to receive the GE phones because I got the 3 free months.

I called them back and this time I spoke to two different people, one in Sales and one in cancellations and both said SunRocket won't honor their previous promise. Talk about "bait and switch". I wouldn't have renewed had it only been 3 free months....actually, had I been given a choice between the two promotions, I probably would have taken the phones over the 3 free months.

Has anyone else been lied to by SunRocket like this?

Oh, I was also told if I cancel now, I'm only going to get 11 months refunded to me. What a screw. It should be a full refund since they didn't stick by their original offer.

Today (a day after writing the above message and sending an email to their comments email address) I recieved a phone call from SunRocket in VA. The guy on the other end apologized for the inconvenience and to tell me that I would indeed be receiving the GE phones.

So I guess SunRocket goes back on to my "recommended" list (assuming there isn't another problem with the phones shipping).

ChampaignWalt- that's great to hear! I know that SunRocket has been working hard the last couple of months/year to improve their customer service. That's awesome you heard from someone in VA about that. If I remember right, that's their main office as well.

Two posts in a row- sorry about that. I went to go check out the SR sight a few minutes ago. I noticed they're doing a new International Calling promotion too. Callin' it "Sunspots". Hah! Crafty name I guess.... 3 cents a minute (if you don't have the Int'l calling plan, I think) to selected countries that they change around pretty frequently. Not too shabby a deal I guess if you're not making too many international calls! Actually, that's a good deal no matter what!

Well, if they do'nt come this time, Just dispute the charge with your CC company and you get your full refund since they renigged on the verbal contract you had with them.

Franky-

why would ChampaingWalt do that when he got a satisfactory answer about getting the phones after all? It IS a grey area, as the phone ship on top of the $99 or $199/2 yrs. deal was always YMMV, but I have yet to see them truly reneg on that verbal promised deal with anyone. Usually they rather err on the side of customer satisfaction. Walt is ok with getting 2 phones in addition to a $8.25 per month deal on phone service. I don't see how he would be helped with a CC backcharge issue at this point. What should he do then? Go with overpriced Vonage at almost $30 a month and nightmares upon nightmares reported from their unbending CS department? Go back to POTS landline at even higher cost? I think he'll be better off with SR at $8.25 per month plus 2 new free shiny phones to boot. :)

Yes I agree. I didn't see that he snuck in that edit way down at the bottom of his post...

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE???

After you agree to renew, how long does it take for SR to charge your credit card? Not that I'm in a hurry, but it's been months now and I keep using the money in the hope that they'll charge me NEXT week. (I know, bad fiscal responsibility. But I wouldn't be here if I wasn't cheap, would I?)

Yeah, I almost missed his edit as well- no worries Franky!

I'd never go back to the landline thing if I didn't have to- that of course would only be the case if I moved somewhere with the 911 issues. That said, I'm pretty sure SunRocket is moving aggressivly to try to correct/change those areas. Its just like the first few years that broadband hit the main market..takes some time to get things up and running everywhere.

I don't know how helpful most CC companies are with that sort of thing- I've never done it. Is it easy to do a 'take-back' that way?

Its been MONTHS? That seems a bit odd. Are you already using SR actively?
If you are, I'm sure you're just as impressed as the rest of us.

Despite ChampaignWalt's recent experience with SR's customer service, as I've said before, they do take their responsibility to customers pretty seriously. I would try giving them a call to find out exactly what is going on with that. That said, if you've already spent that money for the month, maybe you would want to be strategic about when you make that call!

Wow, never really paid much attention. You say they haven't charged you in months?

I was just posting in the World Cup predictions thread, and thinking about the fact that I'm flying out to Germany for a weekend to see a match, and it dawns on me that this will be a perfect time for me to test out bringing the gizmo overseas. Can't wait. :)

I'm not certain, but do they not wait until your current subscription period is up before charging your card for the renewal, and therefore not bill you until the renewal period is in effect?

Perhaps wishful thinking on my part. It'd at least be a nice option.

Ohh! That's a brilliant scheme, that is! Your family will be able to get ahold of you quite easily (or anyone else for that matter). You'll be a true SunRocket disciple- spreading the good will across the world!

You could really confuse your local pizza place with that (providing they have caller ID), call order a pizza and give them an address in Europe- see if they catch on?

LOL. Well, Domino's guarantees delivery within 30 minutes, soooo..... free Domino's at the World Cup, not bad. :)

What game are you going to watch, astrofan?

USA vs. Italy. :D

I wonder if Papa John's can make it to Kaiserslautern... :p

Seriously though, hopefully I can give this a shot. I don't know if the hotel I'm staying in will have broadband in the room or not, but I'm going to look into it.

I would imagine that any half decent hotel in germany (as long as its a chain) would have broadband access. I feel like they'd be better about that over there..just like they have better cell-phones and whatnot.

I can't wait to hear if you can get your gizmo and SR up and running! What a great experiment. You might want to try giving the hotel a buzz- you can probably use the 3 cents/Sunspot a minute promotion their running (I think it goes for germany) to do that too. Then you'll know for sure before you try to lug over all that stuff.

How long are you going to be in Germany for?

I'm excited to see the US vs. Italy myself...should be a good match.
