when you click on Programming > Basic Packages > proceed to Dish site, it displays $24.99/mo. is there anyway to get that or does the extra $5 goto sundish?

Edit: nm, the $5 is for local

Question: are DVR's "hackable" - can I purchase my own DVR rather than rent one, and upgrade the harddrive to a larger hard drive? - can I ultimately record DVD's from the hard drive (as opposed to using a DVD recorder - allowing me the functionality of editing out commercials, etc. before I record)

Thanks.

1 month and counting until I lose digital cable and cable internet :(
1 month and counting until I move from my god-forsaken neighborhood onto a small farm with 16 acres :)

Allsat was cheaper for me:

hrm, i didn't see the 'no-contract' mentioned on the allsat website...where does it say?

I am not knowlegeble here, but what i do know is that you could make your own HTPC to do this...otherwise someone else here could help.

is it me or is allsat cheaper ($29.99 w/ free DVR)? while sundish charges $5/mo per DVR?

http://www.allsat.com/hardware522.php

for allsat it's: "A $4.99 per month additional outlet programming access fee will be charged for each dual-tuner (DISH 322 or DISH Player-DVR 522) receiver. This fee will be waived monthly for each such receiver that is continuously connected to Customer's phone line each month. "

what does it mean by 'continuously connected to Customer's phone line each month'? Do we need a separate phone line for it? I wonder why they would care if it was connected to a phone line or not....

Got a email back from Allsat (they are quick, i just sent them an email too):

"Yes there is a one year commitment and you will be charged $295 for
canceling within the year.
AllSat"

:(

cool, well, they do want your 3 months invoice for the GC, so you have to wait three months. Then i guess an extra month is needed for processing??? At least people are getting them..

Actually, when I signed up through Sundish, they only wanted the 1st 2 months of bills, and that since you pay the month ahead with Dish, that came on my first Dish bill. It has been quite a few months, but I'm still happy to get the check. GP

I got much the same deal last summer, through Radio Shack.

You get a super dish if you have local channels available too. I do have a bunch of internationl channels on there, but don't pay extra for them.

just an update: They (dish people, not sundish) called like 3 times to confirm that the installation is all set for tommorrow. Lets see what happens...hopefully they bring a tall enough ladder. lol.

They are definetly going to freeze their ass off outside since windchill is in the negatives here in Boston.

If you can, for our amusement ... Take some pics of the guy freezing his arse while installing the sat dish

This place seems to tack on $5 more for locals - cheaper thru dishnetwork.com
Nope, its the same if you order from either place. Here is what dish wants:

http://www.dishnetwork.com/con...g/packages/index.shtml

Just look to the right where it says 'with local channels'. That is what you would pay, $5.00 more.

Are the remotes IR or FM?
Eh? Whats the difference and how do i tell?

Cmon guys, the poor guy came and installed it. I feel sorry for him doing it too.

Anyhow, i wasn't home when the installation took place anyways. However, mostly everything went smooth, except that they signed us up for top 60 instead of top 60 plus which i called and corrected in 15 mins. Also, man, that superdish is HUGE. Its got a 'baby dish' next to it as well, weird, wonder whats that for.

Since this is the first time for me using dish, i noticed that channels come up much slower when going from one channel to another compared to cable tv. Is this normal or is there some setting i can change? They set me up with a DISH 322 Receiver, btw.

Thx.

I am not new to Dish network but this is the first time i am actually leaving cable and getting all the channels from them. i placed and order with SUNDISH ON FRIDAY. i got a call later to sechdule the installation which was suppose to be today 01/22/05. The guys shows up and guess what the whole order is screwed up.

I don't know from which end it went wrong but my order was for a DVR 522 with SUPER DISH. guess wat i got the baby dish with the cheap box that's wat came up on the order. I spoke with dishnetwork and reschdule it for firday took me about 30 mintues to get my order right. Hopefully they won't screwup now.

i called back SUNDISH about 4 times trying to figure out wat was on my order frm their end and wat went wrong. After each calls i was promised somebody would call back. i waited the whole day and no call and now answer as to wat happened. the last call i was transfered i believe to china lol. bez i certainly couldn't understand what the lady was talking about.

MY SUGGESTION FOR ANY OF U, WHO MIGHT BE THINKING ABOUT CALLING THEM, RUN LIKE HELL AND GET FROM SOMEBODY ELSE WHO WOULD ATLEAST CALL YOU. THIS IS MY FIRST AND LAST ORDER THEM AND GOD FORBID I EVER RECOMMEND ANYBODY TO THEM.

hrm, i did get the superdish. Did you order international programming? I thought that was the only way to get a superdish...or could you request a superdish other ways (for free, i mean)? But yeah, sundish doesn't call you back. They just don't. They responded to all emails within a day or two, however.

yes, i did order internation channels, i believe this is the only way you can get SUPER DISH. I mean it's bad servies if they promise they would call and never call back.

guess i lucked out then, didn't run into much problem at all. Yep, it is bad service when they don't call you. Its kinda dumb, they should just say 'hey, email me man'.

I was about to sign up with DishNet through a company called VMC Satellite but found out at the last minute that their DVR's don't allow recording one channel while watching another (model 510 or 522). They said I'd need a 721 which they don't carry.

I decided to go with Directv through Verizon's Encore deal which saves $6 per month off any package. At least they use Tivo which does what I want.

Only problem now is Verizon is having a hard time qualifying me since I was a Directv customer over 4 years ago and Directv doesn't want to extend the deal to me since they claim it's for new sign-ups only. Verizon insists I should still be eligible as long as I've not had a DTV acct in over 3 yrs.

We'll see.

All this on the same TV.

Both VMC Satellite and their sub-contractors told me the 522 could not record one channel while I was watching another channel. I found some advertised specs for the 522, but it doesn't mention this ability either.

I don't want to control 2 TV's with the 522.
