My system right now is

AMD 64 3700+ @ 2.6
1gb ram
250gb sata 3.0 hd
200gb ide hd
dvd burner
floppy

and im buying a x1900xt or a 7900gt and am going to need a new psu. I dont want to spend anymore than $100 (around there) on it and dont want to neccesarily spend that much. I was thinking about the Sunbeam NUUO 550w http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16817709003

do u have any recommendations? Do u think its worth it spending the extra $20 and getting the Ocz gamexstream 600w?
http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merchant...oduct_Code=101207&Category_Code=ps-ocz

also i want this psu to power my future upgrades like when i upgrade to conroe probobly late this year or Q1 07.

Also i am looking at this one as well, it is the same as the Silverstone st60vf (silverstone rebranded it)

Core 2 duo uses less power then current generation CPUs.

Don?t waste money on 500+ watt PSUs unless you will go Crossfire or SLi in the future. As far as brands go; Seasonic, Enhance, or Forton-Source, take your pick.

Ok so ive narrowed it down to these select psu's

Enhance 0560G $99 @ eWiz
Enhance 5150GH $67 @ eWiz
Ocz gameXstream 600w $99 @ Monarch
Enermax 500w $99 @ Monarch

I would like to just get the 5150GH becuase its cheapest. Im not sure how much amps it has on the 12v rail combined though. Does anybody know? Also the seasonics are too expensive.

I don't know about that but the OCZ has quad 15a 12v rails, with a maximum of 18a on the rails

What part of "You don't need 500W of power." do you not understand? Buy quality, not quantity. I have this Seasonic in a rig nearly identical to yours and it works beautifully. This Fortron is also a perfectly nice PSU for a gaming rig at half the cost of what you're looking at.

You don't need anywhere near 500 watts, and having more power then you can use isn't going to run your system any better; quality over quantity like cleverhandle said. I built a machine earlier this year very similar to yours and used a 380 watt Seasonic S12.

Other then Seasonic Enhance, and Forton-Source get my recommendation.

I personally its nice to have an 80+ PSU but whats more important is to have a reliable PSU that reeks quality but don`t put to much stock in that 80+ website.
Almost anything that is over 70+ will do you just fine. Providing it has ample rails and the build quality is good!

There are alot of good PSU`s that you can get...almost anything made by Enhance or Fortron,,,the Seasonic 380 that Operandi was talking about is also a nice PSU.

Whats counts in the end is not whether the PSU has an efficiency rating of 80+ but whether you are happy with the PSU you finally end up with!

What is the 80 PLUS® specification?
This makes an 80 PLUS® certified power supply substantially more efficient than current power supplies and creates a unique market differentiation opportunity for power supply and computer manufacturers.

Define the word "substantially" as it refers to a PSU say with a 75% ER vs a PSU with a 80% ER???
So what does that breakdown to a saving of say 50cents a month???

I think galvanized once told me that the 5150gh has 28amps combined... should be more than enough for a c2d gaming rig, especially if you decide on 7900gt(s). The lower wattage seasonics has very few amps on the 12v rails (the 430w version has 14 and 15 respectively) Check out jhonnyguru's atx psu roundup @... i 4 get which site

I don't get it. The 430 watt S12 has 29As (14+15), while the Enhance has 28 "combined"; that?s essentially the same thing in terms of 12v power.

Also a note concerning that 80+ website that neophytes banty about as if its God!!
Individual companies submit there PSU`s for testing.
The good people at 80+ do not go out and buy PSU in order to test them.
Thus the inferance could be made that the only good PSU`s are the PSU`s that are 80+ certified whuich would of course be a totally bogus assumption!

Not all companies need to have an independant companie test there product in order that make there e-penis grow.

It could also be said that some companies submit there PSU`s in hopes that greater sales will result.

Have fun!!

WTF?

The goal of 80+ is to promote energy conservation via financial incentives for investing in high-quality efficient equipment vs. poorly efficient cheap crap; it's pretty much that simple.

you can't just add up the amps... it doesn't work that way. I'll have to ask johhnyguru how he does it... The enhance 5150gh has 18 amps on the 12v rails. If you added those up, you get 36...

Each rail can carry 18A but only has a well of 28A to draw from...Got it??

Combined amps, that's what we look at. I have it straight from Enhance Taiwan,
that the 5150G & GH have a combined of 28A.

I contacted Enhance and asked that they rework thier site for better info, because informed
users will demand it. They made a good start. I'm not sure if my request had anything to do with it. ;)

I guess I'll contact seasonic as to how many combined amps that their s12 series psu's have.
