Sun Sparc to Dell ?

I noticed that my school "upgraded" a bunch of Sun Sparc workstation to Dell Optilex RedHat

workstation. To me it seems like a "downgrade". Any ideas?
 
Depends on the sparc and the dell, if it's an old sparc and a new dell it's probably quite a bit faster with better support and no software licenses to worry about.
 
I agree with rahvin. Most Sparcs aren't that great anymore unless you replace the processors with 3rd party ones. Unless they were UltraSparcs it prob is quite an upgrade.
