I'm going to be attempting to install Solaris 8 at home (must learn my way around the OS for an upcoming promotion). I've checked the HCL and my box is compliant. Any advice on the nuances of installing it on an x86 machine? Also after I get the hang of the install process i'm going to need to get a multi OS boot scenario going, so any advice on that would be great as well. I'm heading over to bookpool.com to see what they have on the subject as well.

umm, it should be fine but it won't like the multi boot pla, so youl have to figure that out. the x86 version is fine and the same as the other 99%.

Dual booting is easy. Just install the operating system you want to have extra (I use win2k) first. Then, use the remaining partition to install Solaris in. It will ask you when you boot which partition you want to boot from.

Muhahahaha, the folks giving advice here must have never tried Solaris. I don't think you would say the same things if you have.

Granted, my first experiences with Solaris on Intel are skewed, because I tried it on an i810 platform, which is not supported. To date, I have had one successful install (out of one tries) on a real BX-platform.

My advice, if you are only familiar with Windows, is to use a second box to playing with Solaris until you get the hang of it.

I'm going to try it out in the same machine but with a different HD, I won't be attempting a multi-boot scenario for quite a while I've decided. It appears that all of my hardware is compatible in this machine except for my NIC. Thanks for the advice.
