Sun Machine wont boot...finding server issue...

Ok, i gt this free Sun machine. Now im no UNIX wizard, but i know a little bit of Linux. Ok, so it boots, and does its thing, but it can't find the server, because its not there. It came from a Lab and it is now in my house. What I want to do is boot it up so that I can attempt to learn a bit of UNIX and Solaris so I can set it up as a gateway or hub or some sort of networking device. But I cant get the thing to boot. If you need any information i can give it. Please help me out here. I am totaly unfamiliar with the boot sequence so if any of that is important i would gladly get that information for you.

I wish I could help, but I'm not too familiar with Sun machines - funny thing is that I'm on one right now. I HATE SOLARIS!!!

Boot from a CD

then your best bet might be to do a reinstall of the software.

That is a good way to start the learning process.

The basics:

On powerup wait for it to get past the hardware scan and press the 'Stop' key combined with the 'a' key. That will put you in it's bios setup.
The 'stop' key is the one in the upper left corner. If you look at it good it has the word stop labeled on it.

In that bios screen is where you can tell it to boot from a different device than the currently selected one.

The firs thing I would do is type:

boot disk

That will tell it to boot off the internal disk. It sounds like it is trying to boot of a network boot server, so it may not have a bootable drive in it.

At this point you would need a solaris install CD from somewhere.

Insert the CD into the CDROM drive (It does have one built in right?) and then type:

boot cdrom

by typing help boot at the bios prompt it will give you some helpful advice on what keywords you can use with the boot command, and how to change the default boot device.
