Yeah, 24x7x365 phone support is pretty bad. Not to mention how quickly you can get replacement parts...

3. tiny software selection

There is a fix to that. 1. Open eyes 2. close mouth 3. Look on various Sun related software sites

4. NO VIDEO GAMES, wtf else would you want a computer?

What kinda reason is that? I dont run Windows since Im working and need to get some work done :D

I like Sun, even their prices are beginning to become reasonable now with the US-III boxes.

Wow. The one person that's probably been affected more than you assclowns by sun than anyone else and all you do is keep quoting things with 7 quotes already in them so people can't see posts like his. I didn't know they laid off your dad, that must suck ass. And sun stock is in the crapper. Blargh :|

Leave it to the Sun nerds to use the quote key like its going out of style (if it was ever in style). The only thing cool about Suns are their logos. The one on my work desk no longer boots up... I hope I broke it.

i've used them a few times at school. i dont know what so special about them its just unix, just like all the other unixes.

sun is doomed anyways... they've already admitted defeat by releasing their first 1u dual p3 1.4 server. the days of proprietary sun OS are numbered.

i tried to use a really old keyboard of theirs at school, that keyboard sucked, you cant type on it, its just horrible.

usually i just telnet in, but really it was no different than using a box in linux so i cant get why anyone pays them for their crap.

I dont particulairily like solaris, its kinda crude and ugly to work with, though ive seen machine (ultra 60) with gnome and all the little applets that looked good. But i definatelly love the hardware - everythign is scsi and most of it is 64 bit risc (the older sun4w achitectures had 32bit riscs) and it works really really good with linux :)

Solaris does look better than irix though, thats just butt ugly. Hell the boot/maintenance menu on my o2 looks better than the actual os.

The best unix machine imho is my 500mhz ibook, its soooo purty inside and on the outside (way better than sparcbooks ) and i can always whip out bash and go play

You've misunderstood why people buy Sun stuff.
It's not cause it looks fancy, it's not cause it plays Q3 very well, or cause it's compatible with Office XP2000.Net.Ultra.

It's cause they can sell you an entire system, a very stable and functional one, along with services and such to go with it.

A SPARC/Solaris box is a far better choice for anything that requires good uptimes than anything in the x86 realm could offer IMO.

But of course, for your avarge workstation, I'd go with x86/linux/BSD in 99+ percent of the cases, SPARC/Solaris workstations don't make a whole lot of sense in most cases, though for servers... x86 doesn't hold much of a candle there.
