Summer noobs in multiplayer games

If there is one thing I do not like about summer, its all of the noobs. Parents buy their kids a ton of PC games to keep the kids busy, then the kids get into multiplayer games with no experience.

While playing a game of left 4 dead 2 the other day, I looked at this guys steam profile, he had 236 games. I have been on steam since November 2004 and only have 80 something games + the free to play games for a grand total of 90 games.

http://steamcommunity.com/id/old-school-player

How does someone that joined steam 3 months ago have 236 games? On top of that, the person sounded like they were 12 years old. Do the parents even realize what kinds of games their kids are playing? Both of my kids have left 4 dead, left 4 dead 2, team fortress classic,,,,,, but I also play those games with my kids.

I dont mind noobs if they are willing to learn, and having a mic helps. But some of those people dont even try to work as a team.

When games go on sale there is usually a flood of people, but during summer vacation from school it gets really bad. Steam, amazon and direct2drive are all having summer sales.

I guess its a combination of people who get into games just for the summer, and parents who buy kids games with no idea what the games are about.

It's not difficult to acquire a large amount of games in a short amount of time on Steam what with the constant sales. I would say that many in 3 months is a bit insane, but I have managed to collect about 130 in a few years.

In regards to 12 year olds playing games; obviously you misunderestimate how terrible the average parent is. They really don't care about what the kids are doing on the computer as long as they are distracted and out of their hair. In fact the reason why they were able to get so many games so quickly is because they took mommy or daddys credit card and started buying up games, and they are too dumb to notice what's on their credit card statements.

We were all newbies at some point. But yes, some people are just less... aware and slow learners compared to others.

L4D is particularly bad for people who just don't want to play as a team. The few times I have tried playing with randoms they have just been terrible. They will run ahead constantly, and get into trouble (smokered, huntered, or trigger a hoard). Then they will bitch and complain about how everyone else sucks. They will also refuse to heal teammates or help out in any way. I've only tried playing with randoms a few time before deciding it was better to stick with friends only.

l4d is slightly different from your run of the mill FPS. I remember when I first started playing it I got reamed hard. That being said, if they refuse to listen and instead start talking smack like a 12 year old x-box kid then you always have the option of vote kicking.

The problem is you're only good at a few games. In the past few weeks I've played Black Ops, Bad Company 2, Killing Floor, Quake Live, CS 1.6, and some other random games mixed in. Each game has it's quirks.

Black Ops is all about situational awareness and knowing when to run and when to gun. BC2 is all about not having a crap team and spotting people. KF is all about working as a team at the higher waves. Quake Live is pure twitch and prediction skills. You've also got to be able to control certain armor/power ups. This game is really fast. CS 1.6 is has the toughest aiming. You've got to learn the recoil for certain guns. Sniping might be more difficult in the beginning for blops/bc2 but there's a crap ton of good awpers in cs and people are generally better at aiming in this game. Played some tf2 the other night and people are baddies.

Awww he has more games than you? =(

I dont have time to play 80 games, much less 200+ games.

During the christmas - new years sale of 2009 - 2010, I bought some game packs that I have not gotten around to playing yet. Then there are the games that I pick up during the weekly steam and direct2drive sales.

Depends on what kind of games your into. I don't have time to spend 100's of hours playing an online FPS, but I can finish several average length (12-24 hour) games per year.

the people you call noobs are just as annoying as people who are not noobs and take shit way to seriosly

actually IMO noobs are less annoying

i pretty much only play single player games now so i avoid the issue alltogether

I know you're probably kidding but I can't express how sick I am of this argument. Do people really want to spend their free time with a bunch of jackasses? No.

All I want when I'm playing online is people that are somewhat polite and understand that what they are doing is playing a game not saving the free world.

There's also a steam summer sale going on, where game packs are like 50-75% off. Very easy to rack up 100s of games.

With online games, I play to win, not for fun.

If I wanted to play "for fun", I would go play some single player game.

LOL wow, what a loser.

Also, why are you playing public games with that attitude? You're like someone turning up to a public beach volleyball net and getting pissed off that the players aren't all olympic-level athletes.

Time to find some friends that share your idea.

I agree winning is fun, but if you get so frustrated in the process of winning the "fun" goes away.

The whole point of a game is because "its for fun".

I agree with you, but he has a point. Online mulitplayer games are like sports. We play them for fun, and for the competition. I think it's completely understandable that someone wouldn't want to play a multiplayer game with inferior competition, the same way you wouldn't want to play a sport against inferior competition.

When I was a kid, 12, 13 and 14 years old, that is what my mom and dad used to tell me. "we play for fun, not whether we win or lose". I later realized that is a load of crap.

If games were not supposed to be competitive, there would not be scores.

If you play for fun, play games that do not have a score sheet. This is where single player games come in. When I want to play for fun, I will play some half-life, or more recently some fallout new vegas.

Does anyone remember the 3 time back-to-back superbowl champions dallas cowboys because they had fun? No, people are remembered because they win.
