Tomorrow is my first day at a certain semiconductor manufacturer with which we're all quite familiar. I'm just a grunt summer intern, and will only be there the next 13 weeks, but I'm certainly looking forward to it as a change of pace from school. Any other summer interns on here? Anyone been an intern? How'd it go? Any suggestions other than "don't screw up or you'll never work there again as a regular employee" ? :)

On a completely unrelated note, Hillsboro, OR, is a nice town. I live just a short ways off of SE Tualatin Valley HWY. That's a bit east of Nehalem HWY for those keeping score.

I had a great summer at IBM.

Even though the majority of the people are nice, there was a definite distance between the "suits" (regular employees) and the interns and mailrooms clerks, etc.

...my first time experiencing corporate america and its class/caste/pecking order/social structure.

That's so true. I had internship at major airlines (free passes, yay!) last summer...there is definitely great distance between "we (regular/permanent)" guys and "they (interns)"...nonetheless, everyone was nice and helpful.

I learned a lot.

I got an internship at Fatwallet up in Illinois for ten weeks. I'll be starting in two weeks with three other guys from different universities around the country. They'll provide me with housing (a really nice apartment complex). Right now I am interning for the biggest credit union in the world (NFCU) doing software development and I will be back here after the ten weeks (I really like it where I am right now, nice people, nice place and it's close to school). I am excited! It's going to be a fun summer and I will get a lot of experience!

Regards

VeggieFrog is on a year long internship. she took her last year of college off do to it. She gets a great salary, and they travel her all over europe, too.

they have offered her a very attractive salary to stay, but she insisted that she must finish college first. and she wants to work for one of the companies here in the USA.

yes, i am proud of her.

Enjoy it and kiss butt if that's where you want to work. My buddy started his summer internship for the first year unpaid at a nuclear power plant and the next summer and breaks he was making like $20 and hour. Upon graduation he got hired on starting around 65K since he already had the company expreience. Not bad for a fresh grad

I did an internship with Lockheed Martin doing instrumentation and control work for naval reactors. I guess you can say it went well, because I'm now graduating with my EE degree and will be working elsewhere for LM on comms/nav/ID systems for a Navy helicopter.

I am a bit torn when July comes and the new interns start my hospital, on one hand it'll be hilarious to mess with them and laugh as they get lost, especially since my hospital is shaped/designed like 3 intersecting crosses and I laugh as they walk in circles :)

On the other hand, it'll be a month of screwed up everything.....i'm dreading these new interns using our electronic medical records, I imagine there will be screwed up orders out the a$$, thank God the system checks for errors and fixes/catches 90% of them before they ever show up on my screen!

I have an internship at a pharmaceutical company that has been in the headlines recently (stupid NDAs). Anyways, it's better since they actually asked me to come back this year. Still bored as hell.

EE, start my internship on monday. I'm really looking forward to it because I've never worked in this kind of corporate setting before.

I'm not really an intern, but I do have a full time summer job. I won't get an internship until my junior or senior year--which is between one and two years from now. I'm hoping I get one at OPPD in Omaha, hoping to do IT stuff.

I had an intership ever summer in college. The first two were with a major defense contractor doing some operational work. The summer of my junior year I was a summer analyst with a global, top-tier, management consulting firm. Since I'm going to b-school, I was able to land a summer associate position with a large financial services company.

The best thing you can do during an internship is network. Get to know as many as you can and learn as much about the business as possible. This will help you later on if you want to return to the company, and if you've met other people in other divisions, it will give you some mobility in case new opportunities come up.
