Suits, suits, who's got the suits?

I've had good luck with Macy's; just bought two new suits regularly priced at $550 for $180 each.

I never had much luck with Men's Wearhouse, but your mileage may be different. Ditto with Jos. A. Banks. They had a great suit sale a few weeks ago, but I don't like how they tailor their pants - I'm a shorter guy and the rise in the crotch is too low so they make me look like I'm wearing Hammer Pants and the tailor at Jos. A. Banks said they really can't change the rise too terribly much. I found great luck with the cut of Ralph Lauren suits.

If I had the bank I would love to get a few nice Brooks Brothers suits - not that 346 line crap.

I don't need a starter suit, persay but a nice suit for around 5 or 600.

And I DO have a Macy's nearby.

If you want to spend that much I would probably stay away from MW. Even at a Macy's sale I don't think they have suits for that much. Maybe you should wait for a sale at Brooks Brothers.

Brooks Brothers is having a sale this weekend if you have their corporate membership through your employer.

25% off everything (normal is 15% with the corp discount), just have to bring your card and the email.

I am with this. People who say to buy a "cheap" suit and have it tailored are just blowing smoke. I can tell a good fabric from a not-so-good fabric and it is pretty evident to people who wear suits a lot.

Brooks Brothers has a semi-annual sale in the June-ish timeframe (around fathers day). A Madison 1818 can be had for about 520 each during that sale.

They had a nice factory sale in NYC last month. I picked up two Golden Fleece suits for $800. Had them tailored do me for another 300. For 1100 I picked up 3.5k worth of suits and they look damn nice.

JAB = suck.

I wear a lot of suits, and have never had a problem with Kenneth Cole or Ralph Lauren brands. They hold up very well (I've had 2 KC suits for 3 years and it looks brand new), and you can get 2 for $400.

If you wear suits to work, you're going to go for quantity over quality. If you just want a suit or two to have on hand, then go nuts at BBs or Armani.

Some other good low cost brands are Banana Republic, Nautica, H&M, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, and J.Crew. I like to stay with cotton as it's more durable and easier to clean. Silk looks nice, but it adds $$$ and you'll be dry cleaning a lot. I like to look for real pockets on the jackets as well (some just have flaps and faux pockets).

Matching tie/hankercheif, a nice reversible belt, and a good tie clip will go a long way too.

Cotton? Who buys cotton suits? You some southern seer sucker blue/white stripe wearing person?

Any decent suit is going to be wool, worsted at the very least.

😕 Everybody? Cotton is the #1 suit fabric right now. Go check out some fashion websites and let me know what the suits they're showing are made of.

Maybe for going out, not for going to work...

I probably see more suits in one day walking 1 block down 42nd Street, from Grand Central to my building, than you see in 2 weeks.

I have *never* seen somebody wearing a cotton suit to work. NEVER. I have never seen it in my bank. I have never seen anybody from any of the other companies in my building. I have never seen it in any of the other two companies I worked at (both fortune 100). Never seen it in a business meeting.

I only see people on American Idol wearing them. If that's "cool", fine, but it is not professional. Personally, I think they look sloppy and cheap and if a co-worker came in wearing one, I'd ask them what tash can did they pull that from.

if ya got da cash h&m get ya a fine suit, ya go to work for government ya be puttin bit more on table mabe mark men warehouse, ya buy anythin else ya be like dem peeps gettin trick for monster cable when all dat crap same

Wow...you must be an incredible annoying ass when you go up to those 100's of suits you see everyday and check everyone's fabric tabs.

Cotton fabrics like poplin are super common and you will have a hard time telling them apart from other fabrics. They're preferred over wool in spring/summer/fall because they're cooler to wear.

Here's some quick examples

I wear a suit everyday (as a personal scratch-off lottery ticket) and don't have a single cotton suit, hankerchief, or tie clip. I am far from the apex of fine fashion so I stay with the tried and true traditional colors, styles, and fabrics. The strangest things in my wardrobe are MUFC, Grateful Dead, and St. George's Cross cufflinks.

Try one out this summer and let me know how much more comfortable you are 😉

I haven't worn or had a suit for years and years, and probably will never have or wear one again (with exception of maybe a wedding rental tux for a friend.)

I can tell pretty easily what is cotton and what isn't and I am no fashion maven by any stretch of the imagination. You can see it in the way it fits, the way it looks (especially this since cotton wrinkles easily), and the fabric texture. I polled 10 guys in my immediate area with about 40 total suits between all of them. There was one cotton suit, a guy who used to live in Atlanta.

Sorry, I forgot you're out on your own. I bet that if you called BB and asked, since you're self employed, they'd hook you up. It's not an exclusive thing and I doubt my employer actually pays anything for the benefit.

That, or find a friend in the area that has a card. 25% off their stuff is a good deal, and it'll last you a long time. We now have a President who wears off the rack BB suits, so they have to be at least decent.
