Anybody who has beein in a heavily depressed situation in their own life knows that if you bring yourself to the final point of ending it it's not through "weakness of character". People who have never experienced depression simply cannot empathize with exactly how bad it can be. It's not something you can look in the mirror and say "Damnit this sucks. Time to buck up, old chap!", and go to a party and be a happy person again. ANYBODY would kill themselves if they were severely depressed to a great enough extent for a great enough period of time. Most people can be treated, but unfortunately part of many depressed people's outlook on things makes them not want to seek out treatment ("It won't work"). Bit of a catch 22. Until you've been there you can't say you'd never do it. Depression suuuuuuucks!

Its weird how sometimes we comment on rapists, killers etc. saying "I wish to God this person could have just killed themselves" and they never do, and the people who do kill themselves are the innocent ones we feel sorry for, saying it was a "waste of life", "unjustifiable" etc.

The papers (very unreliable, in my opinion) blamed the parents for pressuring her over her grades. I didn't know her personally, and I'm not familiar with the precise circumstances. However, whatever the case may be, I believe that there is absolutely nothing, nothing at all, that can justify taking one's own life, especially at age 17.

A lot of sh!t happens in this crazy world, but most people have the strength to pull through. This girl also had a lot of friends and had access to all the support she needed to deal with her problems - school counselors, etc... That what makes this case such a horrible waste of life, a terrible shame. There is nothing that human spirit cannot overcome. If it comes to suicide, it is because of that person's own weakness of character. I also believe that when someone commits this most awful of crimes, he / she is thinking only of themselves. They're certainly not thinking about all the people that care about them, nor of the dozens that can help them. Think of what she has done to her parents and siblings - the guilt. Her friends (and she had a lot, she was also a guide in the Scouts) are now scarred for life.

Why does this have to happen? :(

IMHO: The time you are 13-23 are the most confusing of your life. if you can't grasp it, you will flip out. Some people just flip out more than others.

A girl died last year in high school. Some other girls in brigade always teased her apparently. One time she was having an argument and the other girl told her to go kill herself. What do you think she did?

I have no remorse for people that kill themselves. It's a selfish act.

Ouch.

That's a harsh stance against somebody who's life is in tatters and they hate every minute of it. You really need to go through it to appreciate where they are coming from.

there is no way she comitted suicide due to pressure from her parents over her grades. there must be something else involved. don't be surprised if you hear that drugs were involved, a boyfriend of some sort or even a girlfriend, for that matter.

just because her parents applied pressure on her to get good grades is not an excuse to end life.

do some more research on this...

My heart goes out to you. How she came to the conclusion that life wasn't worth living anymore will never be known. Rest assured it wasn't any single thing though. Mental health in high schools and college is a very serious problem and calls for pro-active funding and policy decisions.

There had been many times in my life I thought of doing the same thing.
One thing above all others has kept me from doing it.

I read a book years ago about people that had had near death experiences. Some through natural causes and others through suicide attempts. When relating their experiences, every one of them said it was a pleasant experience, with the exception of those who had tried to take their own lives. To them it was a very very bad experience. They said that all the problems that they were trying to escape were still there, even in "death"

A few years after I read the first book (Life after life) the author came out with another book, a sequel. After the first book was released, he had many others write to him about their own near death experiences. Depending on the length of time the people were clinically dead, some people went further into the experience than others. Several people described a "area" they passed in their "travels" towards where ever they were going, in which there were these gray shadowy people. The over all impression these people gave off was despair and grief. The people that came into contact with those in this shadowy realm got the impression that these were people that had taken their own lives.

Whether or not you choose to believe in a afterlife, just reading these accounts were enough to convince ME never to end my own life.

I'm sorry this girl found life so hard that she choose this way out. And for her sake, I hope these accounts aren't true. :(

Some NDE's (Near Death Experiances) can be found here if anyone's interested.

Of course, there's more to this story. However, I don't think that the personal details are any of our concern, and it's not our place to lay blame or speculate. It's important to respect her memory.

Skoorb is pointing out something very important here. While I don't have first-hand experience with clinical/emotional depression (for which I am VERY thankful) , I know how destructive it can be. What a lot of people do not realize is that depression can actually be a disease that can only be treated (but not necessarily 100%) with proper medication. Sometimes you cannot just "get over it". Some people need the help of a professional. Not only that, they also need the full support of their loved ones and friends. Clinical depression is an illness, not simply a state of mind. We need to be aware of this and relate to the clinically depressed accordingly. The way we treat them might mean the difference between life and death.

There have been times in my life where I have been staring down the edge of the clife, wondering what to do next. As to say that there is NO justification of taking ones own life, expically at the age of 17, go ask those who did it. If you think someones problems are trivial, and that they CAN survive, you are not them. What would you know of other peopls suffering? What you may brush off and take for granted, others struggle with day in and day out. To make an extream case, look at those who have to work very hard for the food on their table. I know that I will always have food and I will not have to worry about going hungry for days on end. But my troubles are still there. I still have problems. I struggle with relationships and school. I struggle with social hardships and constant lonliness. But to say that another sturggles more then I is but a lie. I am just like this girl, only I am one day older. Who is to say that I wont live to see grey hairs on my head? One day I may take that one extra step off the cliff and leave it all behind.

I have been severly depressed and it sucks! Suicide is something I thought about for a long time. My best friend killed himself in 1998 and I will never forget how much it hurt me and all his friends and family. That is why I couldn't do it.

Sorry to hear about you experience Alphazero. I hope things get better for those of you at your school and her family.

suicide sucks. i remember a boy in my high school committed suicide as well, i didn't really know who he was and that made me sad. of course our school was very large as well. My mom has also tried to commit suicide several times, and even though it hurts and is a selfish thing to do you begin to realize how horrible that person has to feel to want to do something like that. I know my mom loves me more than anything though.

There's a song I've been listening to and it's about somebody contemplating suicide but then they decide to not do it. It's a BEAUTIFUL song and it's called "no lies, just love" by bright eyes if anybody wants to download it. (it's indie/emo/rock type music)

I've been depressed before, enough to make myself get physically ill and lose alot of weight (if you know me, you know I'm fairly skinny, losing weight is a very BAD thing). Thankfully it only lasted for a few months. I tend not to think about that, I really didn't like that period of time....

Something else to look at.

When I first moved here, a week before freshmen year started, I was seriously depressed. I couldn't take it. I dont remember much of it but ill try to tell you. I remember cutting myself to see if I still bleed. I remember walking the 1/2 mile home, but taking the long way and arriving at 3:00AM. I remember sitting in my room with the blinds pulled shut and my lights off. I remember tieing a noose (sp?) to hang myself and looking for a good tree to do it in. I remember my parents talking quietly in a corner while I stared at the door. I remember failing all my classes and getting condemed to summer school. I was told that I saw a physciatrist multiple times, but I dont remeber going. This is what I was told. I remember thinking that I was stuck, that I had no where to go. But never once did I think I was depressed. Never once did I think that something was wrong with me. I may have felt that it was a good day to die, and that this is the only way out. But never did I think that I needed help. It might have crossed my mind, but I probaly thought it would never help.

Ill always have those scars on my wrist to remind me of this time in my life.

our highschool was in the news a while back, some former student stockpiled half a dozen guns and had over 40 explosive devices and according to the suicide note he was gonna take out a community college, he was dumb enuff to take pictures of himself and develop them where he was caught the day before he was supposed to do it.

although makes me wonder how his parents didnt realize he had over 40 explosive devices hidden in the garage

but it is better to kill yourself than innocent others. i'd rather kill myself than others but hey thats just me.

Yeah, I agree. If someone wants to do something like that to themselves, they need to go off somewhere alone and do it, and not involve others.

My girlfriend's cousin killed himself a few months ago. Him and his sister (they were best friends, sort of outcasts, but they went everywhere together) had just gotten back from a party, and he was sitting in a chair, and said, "Sis, look", and as she turned around he pulled the trigger of his shotgun that he had pointed to his head.

I feel for her, that image will be with her forever.
