Yes these wars will cost us for years to come. Not only are there soldiers who are physically and mentally ill but all veterans are given some pretty impressive benefits for the rest of their lives. These were a long stretch of wars that generated a lot of new soldiers.

If we don't count the increase of deaths in this way, relative to the general population, then we are not accounting for the true cost of our wars.

But keep in mind you have to consider how many would have committed suicide anyway in the general population. The fact that so few people die in combat these days is probably a good thing.
