So I currently have the WRT54G v5 router and it is just awful. Cannot get stable internet even one floor below and even when directly connected via ethernet it still gives crappy speeds (though it could possibly be the crappy Charter Internet service too). Regardless, I am looking for suggestions of a router around the same price with about the same features. I realize I could go for a WRT54G(S) v2-4 but I am curious if models from other brands work just as well as v2-4, since eBay sellers jacked up the price on these versions to nearly $100. Any suggestions?

Help would be much appreciated!

I bought a WRT54G from Amazon.com and got a v4. theyhave huge stock. They also said that if I bought it and it wasn't the model I wanted I could return it for a full refund if I chose a certain options when requesting the RMA.

Do you need a hackable router orjust need a decent wireless router? For just decent wireless, anything will do fine. SMC, Netgear, etc. If you need all the extra from 3rd party firmware, then you don't have much other option.

yes i do want a hackable router, so i guess you're right in the fact that i am stuck with looking to get a WRT54G.

are you saying if i e-mail amazon telling them I want a WRT54G v4 they'll send me that? and if they don't i can either get a full refund or RMA saying i want a version 4?

oh and is the WRT54GL hackable? is it any different then the regular WRT54G?

What I meant was I called Amazon and talked to a lady and asker her if she could tell me what version it was. I said I could only use it if it's of certain versions and not if it's a different version. I told her I didn't want it if it was the wrong one. She said that she couldn't guarantee anything but that if I got it and it was the wrong version, I could just RMA it for a full refund including shipping and such.

Do you plan on using options that a hackable one could bring or do you just "want one"? I've seen more than one person search far and wide for a <v3 just to find they liked the factory firmware better than anything else. Or they had no use for the advanced settings and ended up wasting what they gained. Just a thought.
