So I work in probably the worst IT department I can imagine. In fact, I never did imagine this was possible, but apparently it is.

They regularly install software with bad serials, bypass security devices, reinstall trial software to keep it going, etc etc etc.

I am refusing to install any software that does not have a legit serial, nor will I touch the trial software, but I'm afraid it could eventually turn into a confrontation.

So when they kick my ass out for not complying... should I sue for trillions? Perhaps.. billions?

if they give you crap about the serials thing, tell them its illegal to install pirated software and you wont have any part of it because its ILLEGAL

and as for the trial software that could be illegal too, you just need to look at the licence agreement

now that i think about it you have the upper hand it seems

just one lil phone call to that piracy number and they are going down 🙂

What is that number anyway? I've thought about calling Microsoft for an audit, but their software doesn't cost half as much as some of the other software we have. Do I... do I call the RIAA? OMG

i wouldn't do this right away, let them know so they have the chance to clean up there act

i was told that these hotlines are pretty effective because of cases like yours
(an employee gets mad or fired and then that employee reports the company for the illegal software they use)

What do you mean "effective"? Do they come down on them with an audit or something?

yes, and more than likely fines if the company finds something

Anti-Piracy Hotline 1-800-388-7478

there is another number i found

BIG fines. Consider it a trump ace in your hand if management ever does decide to get confrontational with you. You would still be out a job, but so would most of management if the BSA laps them with a little $10M fine or two over repeated, deliberate piracy.

I think I prefer the idea of me getting a little of the action. I'd like to start my own business.

don't blow the whistle just yet. First, if they confront you about your actions tell them that using bad serial numbers and all the other stuff they do is highly unethical and most importantly illegal and you could get in trouble for that. If upper management does not care about all the illegal actions they are committing...then you are free to blow the whistle and not damage your ethics in the process because you tried everything you could to stop the illegal activity.

I'm not affiliated, just Googled it.

Report software piracy here by using one of our online reporting forms below. You may be eligible for a reward of up to $50,000.

You can easily report them and make a ton of cash.

And if they fire you for not doing illegal things, then you can sue them as well for lots more cash.

My suggestion...make it obvious that you carry a gun at work.

When I left my job, I got even by reporting them to the piracy ppl. My coworker who was still there at the time said the local IT guy was so stressed out when he received the letter. He had to call corporate to get them to help with the matter. I guess they did their thing before the investigation went any further. Needless to say I got back at them!
