Suggestions wanted for friend's computer

How does this look? I haven't decided on a video card yet.

I've considered an overclocked Mobile Barton rig, but my friend likes the idea of a 64-bit CPU (with a longer upgrade path). I'm hoping that before he's ready to buy the parts, I can switch to a Socket 939 solution for better long-term upgradability... we'll see.

Anyway, comments? Suggestions?

EDIT: Appears the Attach Code feature doesn't like me, here it is:
(these prices include S&H if applicable...)

Asus K8V Deluxe - $129.00
Athlon 64 3000+ Retail - $222.00
Maxtor 120GB 7200RPM 8MB Cache - $97.75
Kingston 512MB DDR PC2700 - $92.00
400W PSU+Case - $55.00

Total - $595.75

EDIT 2: Oops, forgot to mention - the comp will be used for average gaming and browsing.

That's a high-quality 400W unit and not a cheapie came-with-the-case one, hopefully? 🙂 At $55, it makes me suspicious. PSU quality... everything else in the system rides on the PSU. Make it a decent one, is my 2¢ worth. 🙂

Also, the A64's are going to be best suited by PC3200, and you might consider the Hitachi 8MB-cache drives (fluid bearings, 3-year warranty, supposedly faster than the Maxtors, and I think it's less money too). You could possibly save some money with a less-fancy motherboard if the K8V Deluxe's features are more than he needs, too.

Holly crap... that's the identical rig I'm putting together for my "test" rig at work. Except I'll have 1GB Kingston DDR400, + 80GB SATA HDD, + 2 40GB UATA HDD in a RAID0 config, and a ATI 9200 256MB vid card.

I doubt that all the functions will be use don the K8V deluxe, so a less expensive board can be had. How much more depends on how little you want to spend. VIA based boards are out there for a nice price, but I personally would go for a SiS 755 board, nice performance for the price.
You definately want to get better ram, it will cost more, but your friend will appreciate it. Dittio on a bettter PSU, unless it is a good brandname bundled one, which i doubt.

Yeah, the PSU is something to consider. I'll have to check to make sure it's not an el-cheapo unit (which it probably is) 😉

Thanks for all the suggestions!
