My daughter really would like a iPod Touch (or similar) device.

I kinda refuse to get a Touch (unless you can convince me otherwise) and would like to look into getting an Android based device. But what's out there? Price is a concern too. Any suggestions?

This would be used primarily in the house and MAYBE in the car etc. so no 3G etc needed. Just WiFi.

Archos makes something, but I have no idea if it is updateable, has the market, or has a capacitive touch screen.

If you are in the market for a non-smartphone smartphone, in the the size and price range of the iPod Touch then you are looking at the iPod Touch, or maybe the ZuneHD.

archos internet tablets. they run froyo, and you can side-load the android market on to them. dunno how they compare in terms of battery life etc. though.

Any particular size range? Does she needs it to be pocketable or the larger screen the better?

As mentioned above, the new Archos line are pretty good. They just came out in the past few weeks. You get to choose from four or five of them, from a sub-3" to a 10" one.

What's wrong with iPod Touch? The latest version is actually really good.

I didn't realize that there were new ones out. I would imagine that his aversion either has to do with iTunes, or philosophical problems with Apple at large.

Both really :)
Though in talking to my wife now, it seems the girl REALLY has her heart set out on the Touch. So, if I go down this road, looks like it will be a Touch.

The shitty news is this girl is 7... yes SEVEN. A few of her friend have Touches and she's in love with them (the devices). I will admit she does love her electronics and such, and since I seem to have no problem spending $150 on a LEGO set, whats $175 on a Touch right? Ugh.... Fucking kids.

Don't forget to check refurb. They are identical to the new ones (no scratch/dent) and have the same warranty, but you can save some money. They have a limited supply.

Yeah I've been looking in there... just some 32GB right now it seems :(
I've also looked around the FS/T forum. Some in there.

Whats the major diff between 3rd and 4th gen? Worth it?

The third gen is 3GS grade hardware, but only on the 32GB and 64GB models. The 8GB was in the 3rd gen casing, but it was still using 2nd generation hardware.

The 4th gen has iPhone 4 grade hardware. Same CPU, same RAM (I think, maybe it is 256MB), 802.11n wifi, 960*640 display. It is not IPS, but I think it is LED backlit. So the display is a little weaker than the iPhone 4's, but definitely an improvement over the previous gens. The front facing camera (which the 3rd gen does not have) is the same as on the iPhone, but the rear camera is pretty terrible. Definitely older cell phone grade.

So, the 4th gen is all around better than the 3rd gen.

The iPod Touch 4th Gen has the following advantages over 3GS

Facetime
Cameras
Retina Display
Slightly thinner
Faster CPU
