Who is necro?
Anyways, the keys to this system really are the bubble wrap mounting of the hard drives and the power supply.
The bubble wrap came to me in a dream I think, but the resonating vibrations of a case is where lots of the noise comes from. These are usually result of the moving parts, big ones being the hard drive and its seeking. The bubble wrap lining the bottom of the case eliminates this as long as you don't mind that the drives aren't actually mounted to anything.
Also the pico power supply doesn't apply in all circumstances. Efficiency of a power supply doesn't apply until higher in the utilization most times, ie. 300 watt ps is 80% efficient at 80% itilization, less efficient at lower utilization. Therefore, I decided to go for the Pico and see what happens.
My ESXi server uses about 40 watts idle at the wall according to the killawatt. This is a few watts more than a similarly configured dual core Atom that I had running. This displays the efficiency of the core duo and hard drives. Under load, the server uses more than the Atom, but it gets much more work done faster too.
