Suggestions on an MMO....

Well as with many folks I have seen lately who have been playing WoW for an extended period of time, I am getting a little burned out with the game in general and looking for something new. Really I am only looking to kill about 2 months, that is as long as Age of Conan keeps its new release date .

So any suggestions on something that may peak my interest? I have tried a few in the past, for example EQ2 and Vanguard but that was over a year ago. Just looking for something fun that I can play to pass the time.

No really, stop playing MMO's. If you're getting burned out it would be best to take a break.

-edit- All mmo's have grind base elements, trying a new form of grind might not help.

I agree. Just stop until AoC hits.

The only one worth playing released in the last year is LOTRO, which is fantastic as a pie-delivery simulator.

I have to agree with the others. If you are feeling the burn out or the boredom it would probably be a good idea to stop and recoup. You could always play other types of games until may 20th. Its not that far off when you think about it. AoC will require a level 80 grind so make sure you are up for that long haul. I plan to try AoC too but I'm kinda dreading leveling a toon to 80. But we'll see how fun and easy/hard it is once the game launches.

Agreed.
If you are getting burned out on ANYTHING, you should stop for a while and go back a few months later, it will seem new and exciting then.
This is especially important for video games and more so with MMO's.
Getting off them is like getting off crack.
But once you do you'll feel better.

I recommend a long bike ride or walk every day followed up with some reading.

Around the time you just cant stand it anymore you will have another MMO or your favorite old games will have changed a bit.

To be honest, there aren't any MMOs worth playing until AoC and WAR. If you are burnt out on WoW, try FPS like COD4 or TF2 and when AoC and WAR is released, you will find them fun and refreshing.

I played FF11 for 3-4 years. I never understood it when people said they were bored or getting burned out. Its a game, if your not having fun may as well go work some more and make some money. Only MMO that bored me I uninstalled in 4 days....Hell I even had fun in the Pirates of the burning rectum beta....

I got burned out on WoW and went back to FPS and RTS games. It's refreshing and my love for gaming is coming back...WoW had killed it for awhile. Take a break from the MMO grind and wait for WAR or AoC. It's WAR for me personally.

Exactly. A game is at first and foremost about enjoying yourself and having fun. If you aren't doing such a thing and the game becomes a grinding chore, it reaches a point of STOP RIGHT NOW AND DO SOMETHING ELSE time.

Like take up a constructive hobby, or a hobby that gets you off the computer chair, or perhaps even a different kind of game. Anything as long as you are having fun and enjoying it.

And yeah, I do understand why people say they are bored or burned out in FF11... That game is a VERY VERY VERY fine line to do ANYTHING gainful whether it is sheer leveling, crafting, following the auction houses... and whats worse is that you MUST have people that their free times coincide with yours to do anything. It isn't quite the leisurely game as one would make it out to be... the only thing redeeming of that game is the fact you can play as something cute and you can change occupations at will without new character creations.

And all of those "grats" from leveling.... yeah they aren't signs of "way to go you accomplished something worthwile" they are "hooray! you survived another menial mindless few hours to get another abysmal increment in the neverending MMO cycle."

Hell even in the Diablo days of mine, I kind of look back at it and wished those wasted times would come back to me. But oh well...

Grinds are timewasters...
Grinds aren't fun...
Use your time for something else fun, constructive, active, or all three.

I've gotta agree with most of the above posters, take a break from MMOs. They all boil down to a grindfest. I quit WoW the first time a few weeks after Naxx came out as I was burned out from being in a hardcore raid guild. I started playing again right after BC came out, but quickly got bored and once again quit. Now, I just started playing once again a few weeks ago and I'm enjoying it immensely - but that's because a lot of my RL friends started playing in the interim and now have characters comparable to mine. Just because you take a break from MMOs doesn't mean you have to not play them ever again. I played tons of WC3 DoTA and TF2 in the during my break, also I caught up on a lot of single player games I had missed.

I used to play all the big MMO's, I've played:

EQ -1 year
DAOC -6 month
AO - almost 2 years
AC - 4 months
WoW - 1.5 years
CoH -6 months
DnD - 3 months
Galaxies - 1 year
Vanguard -1 month

After that I swore off MMO's and I'm not missing any bit of it.

I might try Conan, only because of Funcom. AO is still the game I enjoyed the most, the worst grindfest of them all, 200 levels! I think it may even be higher now.

Every MMO I have played always ends up in burn out, frustration, or it feeling like a job. Then when I quit, I feel like I just threw away everything I worked for in the game. Which is why I'll never touch an MMO again.

Sometimes you get a bit tired of MMOs and when I did, I just stopped playing for a bit and eventually went back. The thing is though, I find I spend a lot less money on other things when I play WoW .

Well, you could try something that's free. That way, you won't feel obligated to "get your moneys worth" whenever humanly possible, so to speak.

If you wanna go free, I suggest Silkroad Online.

Thats when you sell your char. Yes it is against the EULA, but who cares if you were going to quit anyway. I played Eve for over 3 years before I quit a year ago. I sold my char to a corp-mate for $500. I could have gotten more but I just wanted my money back. I used the money to buy a new bike. So basically I got to play the game for 3 years for free and had a great time for the most part. I still want to go back sometimes but since I sold my char, I resist the urge (another benefit if you ask me).

I like LOTRO... im in a very fun kin... so it's kinda like a combo of ATOT and gaming.

Me and my wife I are leveling characters together and having a lot of fun doing it but we are both trying not to get too invested... we play a couple nights a week. I don't raid and I have several alts.

I'm also playing POTBS, Pirates of the Burning Sea and find it different and fun compared to all the other MMOs I've played.

AO- more than 2 years until SWG came out. I had 2 lvl 200 chars.
SWG- 1 yr until FFXI came out in U.S.
FFXI- 1.5 yrs. until WoW came out. I had very high fishing and goldsmithing skills
EQ- ~2 weeks. I realized it sucked within an hour but wanted to give it an honest try.
WoW~ 2.5 yrs. until last year. I have a lot of high lvl chars.

AO was the most memorable that I probably enjoyed the most too. There were truly epic 'moments' that occured in the game that were way better than the stupid WoW type events. These epic 'events were player related and dealt with half the server participating in killing the toughest npc bosses in the game or huge pvp wars that dealth with one guild raiding another guild's bases in Tower Wars, a cool concept I hope to see in the new games coming out.

SWG had some cool tradeskill ideas but had too many problems with the rest of the game to make up for the tradeskills. FFXI has the best tradeskills I've ever seen in any MMORPG I've ever played but the game itself was pretty annoying.

WoW PvP was pretty cool while it lasted but battlegrounds gets old after a while and I stopped playing before Arenas took off.

Right now I recently beat Bioshock and I enjoyed it immensely. It plays kinda like Half-life in that the story mixes in really well with the gameplay for total immersion.

I also recommend Orange Box since Team Fortress 2 is the game I play most right now, Portal has the best ending EVER, and Halflife 2 episodes are fun.

I have Call of Duty 4 also and I do enjoy it also but I haven't gotten very far in it yet.
