Suggestions on a switch with fiber module

Hello all,

I recently started up a small sole trader business providing PC and Networking services where I live... a friend has contacted me for a couple of items, including network switches...

I have all the items beside the switches and would like some feedback from any of you all here on what my best options may be.

Basically I was asked if I could provided 2 switches, either 12 or 16 port, capable of supporting fiber modules. The setup is to link 2 offices in a school, with each of the 2 switches hooked up via a fiber link.

Any help will be very much appreciated, thanks!

Well the obvious choice would be cisco. The 3512 has 12 10/100 ports with 2 optional GBICs. Fiber GBICs are very easy to come by. It depends, however, on what exactly he'll be using them for and his price range.

Thanks for the reply.

They'll just be used to link up 2 offices on a school campus, not a great deal of traffic though.

As for price range, i'd say about $1500US max for the two with the fiber modules included if possible.

Dell also sells a switch that is a lot less than the Cisco's and should meet your needs. Look up PowerConnect 3324 on Dell's site. It goes for $349 each.

Thanks for the input guys,

I actually decided to go with a couple 3com 16-port switches and 2 transceivers... worked out to around $500 overall and fits my scenario just fine.

🙂
