my friend asked me to recommand her computer parts for a full comp. she wanted something mid range $ and would last. she also likes to game somewhat (CS, Ruins....etc).

so i came up with this:
my list

well just right now she told me that she gave the list to her mom to buy the stuff while she went to work. mistake? her mom said the sells ppl told her that the list i made up wasn't good (the athlon will burn up!) and recommended her this:

[11:04p] «+SpyDuck» CPU: Pentium 4 1.6GH
[11:04p] «+SpyDuck» RAM: 512 MB pc2102
[11:04p] «+SpyDuck» Motherboard: MSI 645 Ultra
[11:04p] «+SpyDuck» HD: Maztor 40 Gb 7200 RPM ATA100 2MB MH Cache
[11:04p] «+SpyDuck» Floppy: Panasonic
[11:05p] «+SpyDuck» CD Rom: Asus 52x
[11:05p] «+SpyDuck» Video Card: A-bit Geforce 2 mx 64
[11:05p] «+SpyDuck» CD Writer: Lite-On 24x10x40
[11:05p] «+SpyDuck» Speaker: Altec Lansing ??
[11:05p] «+SpyDuck» case: generic

her mom gave in.

so should she ask for a refund and get the computer i recommended or keep the setup they gave her (since the only real difference is the stupid generic case and pentium setup)?

Please suggest
Thanks!

Seems like a pretty decent system and personally I would recommend P4 over Athlon as well. That way I dont' have to educate everyone about all of the VIA's patches and other updates. Saves me so much time! At the same time, if the system would be for my use at home, I would take Athlon XP :)

The system you listed is cheaper, with equal or better performance, but if she didn't mind spending that forget about it.

Well, it all depends. Will you be the one putting the computer together, upgrading it in the future, and troubleshooting any problems? Then suggest that they get the parts you reccomended. Otherwise, let em get what they want. If it turns out to be a bust, they will have learned a valuable lesson about listening to a stranger over a friend.

Either way, not really your call. It's theirs. Let em make their own choice and then explain to them why this part or that part broke when they come to you for future help. But don't be a jackass about it.

That CPU fan will be loud and annoying as hell; I'd recommend a Sunon or Panaflo instead. Also, the mainboard isn't particularly great--the AMD 761 chipset is dated and not a fine performer, and the KG7 is pretty lackluster; I'd recommend a Soyo Dragon+ or an Asus A7N266-E (nForce based). As for the hard disk, that's not a bad choice. However, the best performing IDE drive is the IBM Deskstar 60GXP, and the most silent of the 7200 rpm drives is the Seagate Barracuda IV, so keep that in mind. The CD-ROM drive is a fine choice, but why not a DVD drive? I can't complain about the case at all, though for her needs, an Antec SX830 would probably be sufficient. The video card is a fine choice (make sure to go for the pure version), though you may want to consider Gainward's two Ti200 cards as they are better performers. That sound card isn't very good at all, get an OEM Audigy or an OEM Santa Cruz--unless you choose an nForce board, in which case you should not even buy a sound card. Samsung's 17" monitors aren't superb, I'd recommend the Sceptre D77D. It has excellent image quality and isn't too expensive. As for the keyboard and mouse, I recommend a Belkin for the keyboard and a Kensington product for the mouse (possibly Logitech), and PS/2 is preferrable to USB; Microsoft's input devices aren't great, and Microsoft is evil. The speakers look like good choices, though I don't know too much about digital audio. As for the CD-RW, there is no contest--the Yamaha CRW3200 is hands down the best burner in every test.

1. The XP 1600+ can kick the donkey out of the 1.6 GHz P4 and still is cheaper.
2. Where's the heatsink? Is the P4 just gonna slow down?
3. Get a better motherboard.
4. Get a better hard drive. I recommend Deskstar 60GXP, it runs like a pro.
5. Generic floppies are cheaper and it's hard to find a really bad floppy drive. BTW, since when did Panasonic make floppy drives?
6. You don't need a cd-rom drive when you can just read with the cd burner. Not to mention 52X is unnecessary. If you want, you can get the one cdrom drive with multiple lasers.
7. Spend a little more to get a GTS-V or something like that rather than a MX.
8. Creative Inspire
9. Generic cases sux. Last time my friend got a cheap $10 generic case, the freakin' case was like made of tinfoil, he had to carry it in a cardboard box to LAN parties cuz he was afraid he'd break it just by holding it.

That's my 2 cents.

Well if she wanted and needed what you had recommended she is getting a hole hell of a lot less...the p4 is definitely slower then the 1600+ xp but that could be overlooked, but a f^ckin gf2 mx when you spec'd a geforce 3 ti200...good lord that is like night and day...

Take that thing back or have them at least upgrade the vid card...

NO listing of soundcard either...means those dickheads told here that the board came with onboard sound which IMO has in the last 3 types of boards I have ran into sucked...

Tell this ppl to get a dell...
cause if they are happy with a water down and less performance then what you spec'd then they might as well get some world-class support...

What an ass that sales guy was, he basically only sold your friend parts he would make a good commision on even though the list was right in front of him.

It may not be your system but I can definitely see why you're getting pissed off, I mean he basically called you a moron and said you don't know what you're talking about and he does. Go there and smack him around a bit!!;):Q I'm kidding BTW, don't smack him. Mame him.:D

last i checked the WD 1000BB SE aka WD 1000JB is the fastest IDE drive on the planet. and it doesn't fail like a GXP will.

if she wants 3D games the mx is a definite POS. the mx is sorta fine in CS, but anything more advanced is a ton better on the GF3. or even a real GF2 and not the castrated POS.

and i'll bet she'll absolutely loathe living with the WBK38. everyone else does. as it says over in cases and cooling "like a knife in your ear, the delta screamer." the swiftech mcx 370 has a much easier to live with fan, but a plain old taisol cgk with stock fan should cool the chip just fine (unless shes a "hardcore overclocker," which is doubtful because then she'd be spec'ing parts.)
