I'm thinking of taking an evening of the week to volunteer and try to give back a little.

Any suggestions on something to do? I was thinking maybe helping senior citizens or tutoring/mentoring.

I am sorry to take this offtopic but why would you want to volunteer? Why not relax, go for a walk, read a book etc. Why in the world would you want to do something for free ???

Well, recently I went to India and I saw some unbelievable stuff there. People so poor, they didn't even have shirts to take off their backs. I saw people there completely naked, men and women. That kind of poverty made me really appreciate what I have and how lucky I am to be an American. It also put my life in perspective. I worked on Wall Street at I Banks and hedge funds for 10+ years. I wasn't one of the lucky ones who got their break and after burning out, I joined the Fed several years ago. It's a stable job but doesn't pay like Wall Street. I'm not one to get jealous at other's success but it was a bit frustrating to see people less talented get ahead. Now though, with Wall Street imploding, I can't believe how lucky I am to have a job where I really don't have to worry about getting laid off. A voluntary lifestyle change led to a career saving move. I got divorced recently and got reamed financially so I feel even more fortunate to have my income in these tough times.

I figure why not try to help out a little. Who knows?

Well, the honest to god's truth is that I started volunteering to boost my application to the military. After I did it for a while, I actually liked doing it and felt good about it.

I think that people suggesting you start volunteering in an area you like are correct. I want to add, though, that you shouldn't limit yourself to just that. Part of what makes volunteering great is that you can get a lot of interesting, diverse experiences out of the activities. There are even volunteer trips abroad you can do (not quite the same as missionary trips, don't confuse them), although I can't remember where I saw it now. If you know you are the type to be too affected by directly working with people in severely desperate situations, avoid it for a bit. If you are active, you can join up with a group like Team in Training or Soles4Souls that will train you to complete an event while you fundraise for them. Local animal shelters always need help. Local festivals usually need volunteers, especially things like art festivals. There are thousands of choices available. Seriously, if I were independently wealthy, I would spend the bulk of my time volunteering and administering grants.
