Wifey just got an ipod touch, now I'm looking for software to help me convert some of our dvd's for use on the ipod.

A quick google results in a zillion possibilities... Any recommendations? Something that does a good job with audio sync and is easy to use? Free or paid doesn't matter, I'm ok with either.

You're going to need probably two separate pieces of software. One to rip the DVD files, the other to do the conversion.

You can use DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD to your computer. Once it's on your computer you can then start converting it.
Easily one of the best video converters to use is MeGUI. It's extremely powerful.

There's a guide to using MeGUI after you've ripped the DVD to your hard drive.

Here's another guide using the same software setup: http://arstechnica.com/old/content/2005/10/ipod-video.ars/6

It's written by arstechnica, so it should hopefully be clear.

Another guide on installing MeGUI, in case you're running into issues: http://mewiki.project357.com/wiki/MeGUI/Installation

You can either create your own video profile, obeying the requirements for an iPod, or just download a video profile from here: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=101813
MeGUI usually comes with a lot of preset profiles anyway though.

BTW it's all free :D

If you own a Mac computer you can use Handbrake.

Handbrake does everything all in one program. It also has a preset to export to ipod touch.

if yuo have an nvidia gpu and want something fast, badaboom works well. quality is a little lower than handbrake though.

for reference, using my gtx 260-216, its about 2.5x as fast as my i7 920

I forgot to mention some pertinent info: I'm looking for something for Windoze, I don't have a mac, and the DVD's I plan to convert are already sitting on my HTPC so they've already been ripped. Thanks for the info guys. If anyone has suggestions for other software they've used that works well, drop a note.

i'd just go with handbrake, which is high quality and free. google ipod touch handbrake settings and you should find what works. in fact, i think there may be a preset built in.

if you want something faster/not free/lower quality and you have an nvidia gpu, give badaboom a try.

Yeah, I do what Smitbret says - Anydvd (the free version) and then Handbrake (also free). The latest version of Handbrake does a nice job with the quality versus the size and converts really quickly on my computer (core i7)
