My ASUS motherboard fried itself and so I need to rebuild. It's been 3 years since I did that system so I'm kinda out of the loop and could use your expertise. I need a new mobo, chip and ram at a reasonable price 'cause EVERYTHING at my house is breaking right now! I already have a GeForce 4 Ti4200. The most intensive tasks I use the machine for are photo editing and transferring songs to my iPod. I am a light PC gamer since I've discovered the joy of playing console games from the big velvet sofa.

So whaddya think?

What processor and RAM were in that mobo? If that stuff isn't fried and it worked fine for you then you could just get a new board since you're not doing stuff that's too demanding.

A cheap Athlon system should meet your needs.

An Nforce2 Motherboard (an Abit NF7-S is $85 at Newegg (free ship))
An Athlon 2000+ to 2800+ (a Barton Mobile 2500+ is $88 at Newegg (free ship))
And 512MB of some cheap PC3200 RAM (2x256 is $70 After rebate from Kingston (free ship) Link in Hot Deals forum)

Total: $243.00

Nothing. Being the slackass that I have been the past year or so, I was able to catch up on quite a lot of what's ok. But it never hurts to ask people. These are the people taking those guides, building those systems and experiencing the pros and cons of them on a daily basis. Also, considering I only have internet access from work right now and only when I'm not friggin' busy, asking is a time saver.

Do those answers satisfy you?! Geez.

Thank you Dan. That looks most reasonable! And less than I imagined as well.
