i have had a compaq presario 910us for 3 plus years. it has developed some issues that have hindered its mobility (short battery life, move it too much and it reboots) so i would like to replace it.

uses for new notebook.
wireless web surfing
office programs word, powerpoint. no photoshop etc.
dvd when traveling via airplane.
when not traveling, it will stay at home 95% of the time.

im unsure of the differences between the processers. my tasks with the notebook do not require latest/greatest chip. want light weight and long battery life (we have a 9-10 hr flight coming up) (would like 3 +)

price: $700 - 1000.

I would go with a P-M processor for now and an extended life batt 12cell if they have one for your lappy.

The Celeron gets worse battery life then a Pentium M...
The Celeron lacks the advanced power management that the Pentium M does.
This benchmark might be out of date, but it clearly states that Pentium M processors get better battery life then Celeron M processors. Newer revisions of the Celeron M might of fixed this uh.. "feature".

acers are great computers.....steer away from compaqs and gateways. best bet is a dell, acer, hp or possibly the new thinkpads (they are way less expensive then they used to be!)

if you buy a used dell the warranty follows the computer, so you can generally pick them up in forums or on ebay with warranties....good luck!

We have used Dell Inspiron 600M notebooks for our students for the past 2 years.
The Centrino 2.0 and the 64MB video w/ 1GB RAM are recommended. The video card is not upgradeable, but quite suitable with our Vegas Video 6.0.
We recommend the 7k60 HDD for maindrive and use the media bay with another 7k60, for digital video work.
We use the original HDD as a USB external for transferring files.
We have good luck using the 600Ms and if you're looking for a well-built practical laptop, we recommend the Inspiron. (The Dell Latitude D600 is the same unit)

sad thing is that Compaq and HP are the same company now... nomatter what you get pick up the extended warranty with any lappy.
