Yes, most cities do have groups that work to prevent the breeding of strays but does not solve the public health problem. Live trapping is great and all, but just delays the inevitable. 90% of strays (cats) that go to the animal shelter are euthanized.

i thought cats stick around because they are getting food from the area... so maybe someone is feeding them? either that or you have a meat tree somewhere.

Unfortunately there's a lady 7 or so doors down that feeds the cats. We can see them hanging out right outside her door every so often.

If the animals are creating a hazard you need to either report her or report her as the owner to animal control when they come.

Put the cats in a burlap sack and take them to the river.

I hope you get a vacation.

They have repellants you can buy if you don't have your own animals.

In general if you don't have food available they will not come around.

They're not someone's pets. It's an infestation of animals that needs to be removed. Trapping is a perfectly legitimate way of eliminating the problem. If it were rats or racoons you wouldn't have a problem.

Trapping is fine, but you can dispose of them humanely.

My GF lives in an end-unit rowhome that has an alley down the side of it. I would estimate around 20 stray cats hang out within a 50 yard radius of her place. We find them in the back yard all the time, and we also find cat shit in the mulch all the time.

Anyone have experience with good methods to keep cats out of your yard? The "yard" is about 10' x 20' (rowhome). There are 4'-5' fences and concrete barriers on all sides of the yard.

There is a new puppy in the house, so nothing poisonous can be used. We're also concerned about attracting mice, so foods or smells that cats don't like may not work (unless mice don't like it, either).

Thanks for any suggestions.

OP, where in Baltimore does your girl live? I live in Towson and don't have any problems with pests.

He won't, and neither will the guy who suggested shooting them.

ATOT is anti-any living creature other than themselves, for the most part.

Fixed. See worthless piece of garbage post following this one for a prime example.

In case he edits

So he can drop them into the Mediterranean? I figure a body of water is a body of water, whether its a tropical location or a local pond.

the world of human beings or ... what ?

how about playing one of those recordings of Christmas carols composed of dogs barking ?

I feel for you -- had a similar problem when we lived in Japan. Our solution was to "release the hounds" (ok, only one) who chased them enough that they stopped using our lawn. Nothing like 70lbs of angry dog to dissuade feline visitors. I also used a slingshot with lightweight ammunition to scare them off on several occasions (not lethal, mostly didn't hit them -- just scared the bejesus out of them).

And for those who think it's just silly to worry about, cat feces and urine STINKS, literally. How would you like an open sewer near your windows?

Living in Harford County these days. Hello from up north!

Even if I was allowed to shoot the cats by law, I wouldn't. I love kitties! *snorgle*

There's a lot of rats in Baltimore. I'd keep the cats, and be happy that you have no maintenance rat traps that patrol your property.

No more suggestions like "chicken + antifreeze" or the burlap bag one, please. Posting such "suggestions" means you either fail horribly as a comedian or worse, as a human being.

Next sap to post something like this gets a vacation. The rest of you are now warned.

1) what happens in the rest of the world is not what is OK elsewhere.

2) that article you linked too is a very brief blurb designed for sensationalism. There is quite a few much longer articles on the subject with much in the way of criticizing certain nationalities that choose to torture and prolong the cats (and dogs) death for supernatural reasons.

This post is about the USA where there is no legal place to eat cats whether pet or feral.

In some municipalities you can shoot feral cats if they are a PEST and shooting them does not violate firearm laws. The latter usually trumps the former in many places.

Consumption of cat meat

[edit] In Asia

In southern China and northern Vietnam some people consider cat flesh a good warming food during winter months. The cat's stomach and intestines are eaten, as well as meat from the thighs, which are turned into meatballs served with soup. The head and the rest of the animal are thrown away.[4] Organized cat-collectors in Nanjing's north-western suburb of Pukuo regularly ship cats to be used as food to the southern province of Guangdong where felines have become scarce due to their use as food.[5]

In Korea, Cat meat is sometimes boiled and made into a tonic as a folk remedy for neuralgia and arthritis, though the meat by itself is not customarily eaten.[6]

[edit] In South America

Cat is a regular menu item in Peru and is used in such dishes as fricasse and stews. Cat cooking techniques are demonstrated every September during the festival of Saint Efigenia in a town of La Quebrada.[7]

[edit] Europe

Historically cats have been eaten in the West. [1] In Europe, cats are eaten in some rural parts of Switzerland;[8] the traditional recipe on farms in some regions involved cooking the cat with sprigs of thyme.[9] Inhabitants of Northern Italy, particularly those of Vicenza, are still nicknamed "magnagati" ('cat eaters') as a derogatory term in Venetian. [10]

Australian Aborigines in the area of Alice Springs have developed the custom of eating the cats introduced into the region by European settlers, roasting the cats on open fire and considering the dish delicious. The Aborigines have also developed traditional recipes for cat stew, and roasted cat with garlic and butter. Some other inhabitants of the area have also taken up this custom, justified on the grounds that felines are "a serious threats to Australia's native fauna". The idea is, however, very controversial in Australia, and scientists warned that eating wild cats could expose man to harmful bacteria and toxins.[11]

Because cats are carnivorous, consumption of cat meat is not permissible under Jewish or Islamic dietary laws.[12]

as for illegal, its probably illegal to sell it.

not sure whats the ethical difference between shooting a pest and burying it and shooting a pest and eating it.

one seems less wasteful.
